The Three Colors Trilogy is a must-have in my opinion. Along with Paris, Texas, Days of Heaven, and The Thin Red Line.

Just a heads up, if you're looking forward to buying Umberto D. and don't want to wait for next sale, you can buy off Criterion's site, and when you go to the cart type the code: "BOOHOO", and you'll get 50% off.

Whenever I see that baby from Eraserhead, it gives me...

Sorry, off topic.

I haven't been up to date with Criterion blu-rays (well blu rays in general), some I still want to get (Breathless, Harold and Maude, etc.).

Samurai Trilogy
12 Angry Men
La Haine

And I will for sure be getting Down By Law if it's available as part of the sale.
Your first list is a very intriguing one.

As for choosing one from the second list, I'm torn between 12 Angry Men and La Haine. Since most of the films in your first list are more contemporary, I'll recommend 12 Angry Men.

Purchase Plans for this Month's Sale
[Show spoiler]
  • 8 1/2
  • Battle of Algiers
  • Beastie Boys Video: Anthology
  • Crumb
  • Cul-de-Sac
  • Down by Law
  • Fanny & Alexander
  • Gomorrah
  • House
  • La Jetee/Sans Soleil
  • Orpheus
  • Paris, Texas
  • Robinson Crusoe on Mars
  • Rushmore
  • Solaris
  • The Three Colors Trilogy
  • Videodrome
  • Vivre Sa Vie

Opinions are welcome!
[Show spoiler]The 400 Blows
and
[Show spoiler]Wings of Desire
are two terrific purchases as they are among the best packages in the entire collection. I've long considered blind buying
[Show spoiler]For All Mankind.
After you view it, let us know what you think.

The films from your Purchase Plans list that I found to be the most memorable and also resonated the most are:
[Show spoiler]8 1/2
The Battle of Algiers
Fanny & Alexander
Gomorrah
La Jetee | Sans Soleil
Orpheus
Paris, Texas
Solaris
and
Videodrome

They're all excellent films but I'd perhaps recommend
[Show spoiler]The Battle of Algiers
the most. It's visceral and utterly riveting from start to finish — and its themes still apply to many parts of the world today — plus, it has a terrific and extensive supplemental package to boot.

My options so far:
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Blow Out
Beauty and the Beast
The Last Temptation of Christ
The Lady Vanishes
Cul-De-Sac

Any thoughts would be appreciated.
These films are so different in story and style from one another. That's a good thing. I'm assuming they would all be blind buys for you. They all have compelling advantages working in their favor.

I'd recommend Beauty and the Beast the most strongly from that list. That was a blind buy for me and, upon first viewing, I came to adore it.

I also quite enjoyed Blow Out and found the story in The Last Temptation of Christ intriguing.

Would go for Blow Out and Beauty and the Beast.
First one is a wonderful suspense flick, the other one pure poetry.
Would definitely avoid Cul de sac.

I bought 'Fish Tank' and finally watched it the other night. I only saw the trailer and was intrigued. After watching it .....not impressed at all....even watched the shorts. WTF is up with all the hand held jarring?? Its not artsy, its annoying! And seems to carry throughout from the shorts to the full length. Its up for sale or trade

On June 5 I bought The Seventh Seal CC Blu from Amazon - it was $18.81 in my gold box - amazing random deal. It shot back up to $25 like 2 days after, and now its up to $33 (!)
So, they originally told me 7-10 days until it would ship. After about 2 weeks it said another 7-10 days. Now, I get an email from them asking if I want to cancel the order or continue to wait until they can "find it". In the my orders section of the site it doesn't even give an estimate it just says "We'll notify you when we're ready to ship" but yet on their site you can buy it with Prime and have it delivered by Monday for $33.
Did I just get taken by Amazon? Or will they eventually send out my Blu whenever they make their money off the stock or something? What the hell happened?
call customer service before you do anything and make a mistake and cry all over the forums (j/k) Call customer service, that part is honest

The one that's $33 is sold by Newberry Comics, not by Amazon. So it looks like it really is out of stock on Amazon.com. As long as you don't cancel, I'm sure they will ship it. Maybe they are just having a hard time "restocking" because of all the units they sold with their own sale, and now Criterion probably has huge orders to fill to supply Barnes and Noble.

Nice to see many others are interested in the Eclipse sets. I will be getting about 8 them, just been pushing these back all the time in order to get something else. Got myself ready this time, have the money for them and plan on getting them and just not wait any longer

I, too, have been hoping for Stray Dog—although I would like to see Ikiru even more. In my opinion, they're both fairly underrated, especially compared to his samurai films.

Even though I've never seen those films (just heard of them), I would definitely be happy for another Federico Fellini title, especially after thoroughly enjoying 8 1/2 some time ago and Amarcord just a few days ago — both on my Criterion blu copies.

I've seen Shallow Grave, Gold Rush, 39 Steps, and Being John Malkovich. War Room I want to see due to my interest in politics, and my amusement at James Carville. Letter Never Sent, I don't know much about, but it'll be 15 bucks. Fish Tank for some reason appeals to me, but I can't explain why.

I'd also like Harold & Maude, Night To Remember and Last Days of Disco, but I may wait until the November sales for those what with me having to save money for the James Bond, Universal Monsters, Hitchcock, and Indiana Jones sets in Sept/Oct.
Ah, yes. Being blu-ray aficionados means having to constantly budget and save for our neverending fixes, lol

But, I can personally recommend many of the titles on that list. IMO, it's indeed a strong one. I thought Fish Tank, which I originally saw in theaters, was one of the best films of its year. It's one of those European films that tell their stories in a very realistic way, largely without music in the soundtrack and a very simple and straightforward visual aesthetic. It really works. (Another recent film that has a somewhat similar aesthetic—though a much different story—is Weekend (2011) by Andrew Haigh.)

I just blind-bought Letter Never Sent from Amazon when it had a low price point. I suspect I'll really enjoy it. From what I read of Svet's reviews and the screenshots it reminds me, albeit obliquely, of Masaki Kobayashi's trilogy entitled The Human Condition.

Harold and Maude has long been one of my all-time favorite films of any kind.

For the person who watch this for the very first time, if you feel it as a look of an American western, don't be surprise, it does. Plus if you are watching it for the first time and you feel it look's very similar to a western you may have seen, that's because it is. Sergio Leone remade this into a western in 1964 A Fist Full Of Dollars. A lone samurai walk's into a town where two rival gangs are figthing for control. He soon as both side trying to have him fight for them since his skills are duperior over those of the gangs. He seem a bad guy but look's can be deceiving and he may not be such a bad guy afterall. I feel Yojimbo is a very good introduction for those not familiar with the samurai movies. It as a very American style and is a bit shorter than the longer epic Seven Samurai. Toshiro Mifune is in top form in this one, one of is many epic roles. For those looking for a blind buy I would say it's save enough but would still recommend a rental if you can manage it first.
Thanks for the review P@t. This, along with its sequel Sanjuro are among the titles I've blind-bought but still need to watch. I'll likely watch them before the summer is over. Unlike you, during the summer months, my watching of movies at home increases in part because I watch fewer TV series than during the other times of year.

You may wish to wait until the Barnes & Noble 50% off sale to buy it. It would be covered during that sale so you would have it for about $20, before any coupons or rebates.
