I definitely agree with this entire post, including about Badlands. Unfortunately, Warner Bros. Pictures, which owns the rights to that film, doesn't typically license the films in its library to third parties like Criterion. So, unless the studio makes an exception (maybe Malick can convince them), we'll have to wait for Warner to issue its own blu-ray.

BTW, I'm certain Warner will eventually release a nice blu-ray of Badlands. WB is actually one of the best studios for catalog releases on blu. It releases them frequently, in good quality and, typically, with a very competitive pricetag. Who knows, it may even do a blu-ray book.

So, it's just a matter of time before the film is out on a high-quality blu. It just probably won't be via Criterion.

Gonna take advantage of my birthday as a time to pick up some Criteirons

My girlfriend already gave me my birthday gift early, and it was my most wanted Criterion at the moment, Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence Can't wait to sit down and watch it. For now, I'm just trying to catch up on Breaking Bad before the new season starts Sunday.
Nashville on blu from anyone would be great, as long as the a.v. quality is strong. A major gripe I have with the existing DVD from Paramount (one DVD in a long series of cheap and low-quality discs that studio created in the DVD era) is the picture is too soft and, worst of all, the intricate and sophisticated soundtrack is, frankly, a muddled mess. Nashville from Criterion would likely be best because the technical quality is almost guaranteed to be optimal so I can finally enjoy the audio and there would likely be at least a few worthy supplements.

Happy birthday. What a great excuse to binge on the sale (if you really needed any beyond being a film aficionado).

A couple years ago, I, like you, had that same itch and blind-bought Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, then watched it shortly thereafter. It immediately became one of my very favorite films in the entire Collection. I absolutely love that film. It's a commentary on war and the soldiers who are charged with waging it, among other issues, but it's style and approach are highly unusual. Tell me what you think after you watch it.

You mean sort of like Sony and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)? (Except with that release buyers didn't even know which graphic they were getting. It must've drove some people completely mad.)

Also, don't forget to click through the Ebates.com site: http://www.ebates.com/stores/barnesa...ggest&store=96

You'll receive a rebate for 2% of your total purchase price. It's small, but every cent counts, right?

Does anyone know for certain if Criterion's AK 100 box set, which contains twenty-five of Akira Kurosawa's films, feature all the special features/supplements for all of the films available singly or in other Criterion box sets? After reading the product description at Criterion's site I'm not 100% clear on that.

I've just been curious.

Thanks again for the tip, Detroit.

Although I hadn't originally planned to start buying anything under this sale until later, your tip of the two overlapping sales helped trigger the purchase of my first three titles in this sale (among the first few to pop into my head, actually):

Late Spring
Lola Montes
and
Leon Morin, Priest

They all happen to be old classics (and, oddly, they all happen to start with the letter L ).

The total, which includes tax, was $43.52. That's $14.51 per title, as opposed to the $21.76 per title (again with tax included) that I would've paid with the 50% sale alone. (And with the Ebates rebate I'll receive back a whopping 87 pennies, lol.)

But my 50% Off shopping spree is far from done...It's just begun.

To my knowledge, it's just the films and no special features.

Been waiting for the B&N sale. Criterion BDs are too expensive in Canada, so I save up for this. The Buy 2, get 1 free extra is a great bonus.

Placed 3 orders (Don't want to get dinged with customs, so I split them)

Order 1-
Branded to Kill
Harakiri
Makioka Sisters
Tokyo Drifter
Kuroneko
Gojira
Total = $99.89. (Shipping is more to Canada)

Order 2-
Charade
The Lady Vanishes
Harold and Maude
A Night to Remember
The Music Room
Topsy-Turvy
Total = $99.89.

Order 3-
Three Colors Box
David Lean Directs Noel Coward Box
Samurai Trilogy Box
Total = $104.44

As Bergman is a tie for my favorite director, and as much as I love Persona, I'd be even happier for a blu upgrade of his "faith" trilogy.

No extras (aside from the book and attractive packaging). That's what I suspected. Thanks for that confirmation.

In that case, I should really go ahead and order the two Kurosawa blu-rays I've long wanted: Kagemusha and High and Low.

Here's what I went with:

Modern Times
The Great Dictator
Being John Malkovich
Belle de Jour
La Haine
World on a Wire
The Last Temptation of Christ
If...
Godzilla

I already got The 39 Steps, The Gold Rush and Shallow Grave during the regular B2G1 when they were $26.59, which I'm now obviously regreting, but if these actually go through, I'll be one happy camper. Now bring on Rosemary's Baby for October Criterion, my birthday is this Friday and despite being deemed as unlucky (and my last birthday that fell on Friday the 13th was very much so), releasing one of my 5 Favourite Films on my favourite label would be one of the greatest gifts I've ever recieved.
