![]() I think I'd probably like Christian Bale more if it weren't for his Nolan films. I was blown away when I learned that he voiced Howl in Howl's Moving Castle (awesome film, Ghibli fans who bash it are silly, but the novel's even more awesome). Quote:

I completely disagree. I love the Nolan Batman film and admire how he takes a ridiculous concept and turns into something that seems believable. On top of that, the camerawork, acting, and direction are excellent.

I'm heading back to Barnes and Noble and trying to decide on a few titles. I have 60 bucks to spend. I've narrowed it down to these:
Battle for Algiers High and Low Three Colors M Rushmore Yojimbo/Sanjuro Kagemusha If you had 60 bucks to spend, which ones would you get? ![]() |

Three Colors M Battle of Algiers or maybe replace Battle of Algiers or M with one of the Kurosawa titles. Three Colors is a no brainer to me, but tastes may vary. its not your typical type of movies. If you get Kurosawa I'd suggest High & Low or Yojimbo over Kagemusha. Yojimbo is always a pleasure to watch and has good replay value IMO. Last edited by Banned User; 07-11-2012 at 08:11 PM. |

I think that's the problem with his Batmovies. He either tones down the over the top aspects too much, or tries to give an in-universe explanation to everything that it just becomes bland. That, and I feel that the plot dictates the characters all the time, instead of the other way around, but that's something all Nolan movies have. I do admire him trying to use as little CG as possible, but after watching the first trailer of the new Batman movie, that's already out of the window.

Have just ordered B&N criterion sale
battle of Algiers Beauty and the beast Four feathers Jean Vigo Robinson Crusoe on Mars Wings of desire I also had 'The 39 steps' in my basket (19:99) but it was mysteriously removed. Thought it had gone out of stock but it's gone up to $29:74. I couldn't believe it!!! Too slow for sure on my part then again sly on B&N's part for removing it like that but you win some you lose some. |

I know I am in the minority here, but I am really fond of Kagemusha, Kurosawa likened it to a dress reherssal for RAN, but everytime I turn it on I get sucked into a hypnotic trance of pure awe and wonder at what is taking place on the screen. Only a few films can place me there: Apocalypse Now, Once Upon a Time in America, Stalker, Solaris, Army of Shadows, and Chinatown to name a few. I did my own pick 3 at B&N yesterday: Crumb, Seven Samuari (upgrade from DVD), and !Alambritsa! |

It may fit but I honestly think there are some better Mexican films out there. I would like to see Gavaldon, Fuentes, Fernandez or Ripstein joining the Collection. Some amazing stuff to be found there. Nowadays, the strongest Mexican cinema is found in documentary, in my opinion. You should check out some Juan Carlos Rulfo, Lorenzo Hagerman and Everardo Gonzalez, all of them great documentary directors.
