Your point about generating traffic is well taken. But Barnes & Noble needs to have meaningful sales such as the 50% off or Buy 1 Get the 3rd Free more often, even without coupons. As it stands, the retailer, with its usual pricing close to list prices, just isn't very competitive with other sellers (at least as far as the media department is concerned) and that has to adversely affect traffic, returning business and customer loyalty, all of which retailers need to succeed.

I took a few of the strong opinions for Double Life of Veronique on this board and picked that up too, but I'm more confident in that buy cause I dig atmospheric, stylized films.

You can add my opinion to those strongly in favor of Broadcast News. Criterion's blu-ray was a major upgrade over the old Fox DVD, which had been in my collection for years.

The picture is a cornerstone of not only 80s cinema but American film in general and is easily one of the best films of its genres (which include, first and foremost, movies about the news media, but also dramas, comedies and even romance). It keeps good company with the likes of Network, All the President's Men and Sweet Smell of Success.

The supplements on the Criterion release are also quite informative and nearly as interesting as the feature itself.

So, peel off that shrinkwrap and enjoy.

That's quite a nice stack. Some of those (Wings of Desire, Solaris and Basil Dearden's Victim) I consider to be among the best in the whole Criterion Collection that I've seen.

There are plenty of Criterion (and other studio) releases that offer much in the way of substantive backstories without the participation of the feature's director or original filmmakers. Take a look, for instance at Terrence Malick's The Thin Red Line or most of the old classic films where the director was not available. It can definitely be accomplished.

True, but I think Criterion wants more of a relationship with Lynch other than a quickgrab on one of his titles. I'm sure they'd still love to release Eraserhead, along with anything he'd be willing to license to them. Any Lynch titles would probably be pretty big sellers, as well as a feather in Criterion's artistic cap.

Oh, sure. Lynch's participation would be, far and away, the preferable scenario. But the appearance of an excellent and informative set of supplements need not be dependent on the presence of the film's director.

Thanks! Victim is the only one from that set I've already seen and really was what influenced me to buy the set at all.

I see your point BluPix, and hope you're right.

Still...I would miss Lynch discussing his creative process in taking a conventionally plotted failed TV pilot and spinning it into such a landmark achievement in free-associative cinematic storytelling.

Unfortunately, while correcting their audio error on White, they never corrected the incorrect framing on Blue, and stubbornly stand by their version even though they refuse to get a direct statement from the original DP about it (though the master provided by mk2 was framed lower than it should be, even resulting in microphones dropping into frame).

I ordered mine from Criterion during the valentines sale and it was a clear case...was Breatheless ever a digipack?

As far as I know, Breathless never was offered in a clearcase. It's in a much more awesome digipack with two discs and a thick booklet.
