Some great films there---but I would easily pick the Oshima Eclipse set out of those as getting my highest recommendation.

Speaking of redundant releases, while I'd certainly buy The Lady Eve (though granted, that doesn't say a lot), if they're going to get some Stanwyck out of Paramount I'd love to see a quality release of The Strange Love of Martha Ivers. Assuming Paramount has decent source materials that could be a good whacky C candidate and the Film Chest release doesn't sound too impressive.

Amazon.com has this on blu-ray for $12.99 right now. HD Cinema Classics is listed as the studio (I don't know if that's the same as the Film Chest release). I have this and I absolutely loved it. At that price it's worth a look even if you're waiting for a Criterion release.

I think you'd be quite surprised by these. I prefer Branded to Kill to Tokyo Drifter though you can't go wrong with either. Secret Sunshine is excellent and Close-Up is one of the finest films of the past couple decades, imo.

I picked up Shallow Grave and The Gold Rush today. Al I can say is that Shallow Grave is absolutely fantastic and so demented. The whole thing is an amazing thrill ride. I felt that it was such a demented and macabre thriller, that I feel it really does cross over into the horror thriller genre. There's so much to it that I find it hard to not classify it amongst horror films. Am I wrong? Kind of like how Psycho is such a horrific thriller that it is both horror and thriller.

Picked up "Howard's End" today. Love this movie and have been wanting it since it came out almost three years ago. Can't wait to see what it looks like on Blu.

Battle of Algiers and Carlos makes for an excellent double feature. Both examine guerrilla warfare. It was really interesting to see Carlos' fascination with T.E. Lawrence and Algiers.

It also gives you quite a big clue as to what is happening in the finished movie because asides from all the deleted/added material the only thing they changed from the "pilot" footage was putting Naomi Watts voice on Diane Selwyn's answering machine...

While impatiently waiting for my B&N orders to arrive I popped in Last Year at Marienbad to watch this last week. It was one of the very first Criterions I purchased on blu (when there were very few to choose from back then. I hated it then - didn't really understand it at all. I must say the second viewing was a whole different experience.(probably says as much about my growth as a movie lover as much as anything else). I sat transfixed through the whole movie - even rewinding a few times when I wasn't too sure of what was being said. It's not for everyone but I found it visually and artistically stunning on second viewing. I would highly recommend it during the B&N sale if you value storyline as much or more than non-stop action. (And I'm not knocking action movies either-you just won't find much in this movie)

I just watched Double Life of Veronique. The film was amazing and Irene Jacob has to be one of the most beautiful women ever put on film.

I totally agree with this "definitive" sentence. La Double Vie de Veronique is one of the sexiest movie I've ever seen. It's difficult to not fall instantly in love with Irene Jacob.
Criterion did an amazing job even with their Blu-Ray menu. The first time I loaded the blu-ray on a HD Sony TV set I had the "Videodrome" side-effects that Irene Jacob was breathing behind the glass of the screen (it's not glass these days , and well I have a videoprojector now...)

I highly recommend that you watch "Red"... Jean-Louis Trintignant is amazing in this movie.

Somehow I find that Kieslowski had a very sensual and fetishist approach in his way of filming "her" actresses (focusing on the details ... the lock of hair of Julie Delpy, sleeping beauty in "White" for instance).
Sometimes this fetishist look makes me think of what Wong Kar Wai will do a few years later...

and even as "Miss catalogue La Redoute" in Les Beaux Gosses Irene Jacob is...wahou...

You can tell that Kieslowski not only loved her as an actress but as a beauty as well. His camera dwells on her in an almost lustful way. That movie is just so god damn sexy, lol.

Just ordered the Three Colors Trilogy, For All Mankind, Branded to Kill, Tokyo Drifter and Robinson Crusoe on Mars from B&N. That's my first order from them ($40 shipping to Hungary, ouch!), I hope everything will be going fine.
