Oshima's Outlaw Sixties is another title I've been really eyeing. I may manage to squeeze it in during this sale within the next week or so. I'll see. I did buy Nikkatsu Noir yesterday, though. I've developed a love for Japanese films from that era.

I was having trouble deciding, but I ended up choosing Oshima's Outlaw Sixties and Harakiri

Not really, just lots of speculation. Rosemary's Baby could be a strong possibility.

So how's Jean Piere Melville's Leon Morin in comparison to his other films (Le Cercle Rouge, Army of Shadows, Le Samourai)? I plan to buy at the BN sale.

Just watched Videodrome and I loved it. Hard to watch at times, but never dull. He sure knows how to unnerve you.

For those who have seen the 39 steps bluray, how's the pq? I just picked it up and just saw the review on here which gave it a 3/5.

If you mean 'is it as good' I can without hesitation say yes.

If you mean 'is it similar' that's harder to say. It's very dialogue and character driven but it never drags. It also - and this is really remarkable - never slides into cheap melodrama. It treats the characters like adults with adult feelings and conflicts and treats the viewers like adults who don't have to be led by the nose.

It's very good.

I must say the second viewing was a whole different experience.(probably says as much about my growth as a movie lover as much as anything else). I sat transfixed through the whole movie - even rewinding a few times when I wasn't too sure of what was being said. It's not for everyone but I found it visually and artistically stunning on second viewing. I would highly recommend it during the B&N sale if you value storyline as much or more than non-stop action. (And I'm not knocking action movies either-you just won't find much in this movie)
Last Year at Marienbad is one of my favorite CC blu-rays. Criterion hit that one out of the ballpark.

I've seen the film somewhere around twenty times. Every time I see the film again something seems newly discovered. (a nuance in a line of dialogue, or a gesture of an actor)

For my money, one of the few "perfect" films ever made.

It's much different than those crime pictures. Melville was an atheist but to his credit the film takes a very fair and mature look at philosophy and religion. I think you will be really surprised by how good Belmondo is in the film. Emmanuelle Riva is great, too.

Personally, I prefer it those crime pictures of which I also think are great films.

Watched Umberto D. for the first time on Criterion Hulu this afternoon. What a devastating character study. The film is probably as relevant today as it was when it was made. (if not more) This will be a definite pick up at the next sale.

I ordered my copy for $19.99 (Well, more like $25 after shipping) from Criterion by using code BOOHOO.

Nice list ShellOilJunior, but where's the 'theme' artist? Hasn't Criterion settled into this groove now where we get 2 works by the same 'featured' filmmaker each month?

If so, I'd bet on another Polanski, possibly The Tenant...or maybe Tess...or wait a minute, what about his Macbeth?

That's why it's time to break that trend. They get us thinking we will get 2 from a filmmaker in the same month then surprise us with Border Radio
