Thirded! Wouldn't that be a kick to the teeth since I just night imitation of life if they add that! I'll still upgrade my DVD as I doubt criterion will include the 1934 version.

Any idea how this disk is? Transfer, et al? Might be worth a dip in an .it group buy, though I'd gather it should be getting a domestic (Criterion) release at some point.

I know it's OOP on Criterion! I wish people would stop reminding me of that reality. I'm just trying to dream!

There's tons of stuff in other regions of the globe that are public domain, but here in north America, it's still copyright protected and will be for awhile.

I agree that criterion should give some sort of indication as to the hold up though. Have people even asked, or do they just talk here.
Could be, BUT, for example this excuse when I bring up something like why hasn't Criterion released any Brazilian films. New Yorker seems to be doing fine with the "issues" when it comes to those. I just think they cater to a certain film school/IMDB list making fan base who wants to see/learn/experience more than just Kubrick, but not too much. The arthouse crowd. On my side, I don't care if a film is as obscure as coming out of a cave somewhere, it's like any other form of history, it's interesting and should be respected enough to care for. Here I'm talking like Brazilian cinema isn't important. It's highly important. There is more filmmakers to experience from the Cinema Novo than the French New Wave for example. Why does no one care? Because it doesn't fit in the Euro-arthouse turn American film school rotation of films that everyone places in a bubble as art. New Yorker has released 2-3 Cinema Novo films I believe and have e-mailed me back saying they will release the great South American film Hour of the Furnaces next year. I don't see why Criterion can't spit one out among all of it's European, Japanese and American films.

I might eventually...because now Bourgeoisie and Departures have region-B locked releases...and I covet them! But I am totally aware of the StudioCanal release. I was drooling over it this morning when I read the review.

Personally, I enjoy Melville 10 times more than I do Godard, and wish CC would finish upgrading his titles to blu. However, I realize it is subjective so I don't get mad when CC doesn't release anything by him.
Because people on here complain about EVERY release. If Criterion announced The Magnificent Ambersons with the studio cut as well as a long lost recently discovered print of Orson Well's original cut, SOMEONE would complain. "This is a release that anyone could do. We need Criterion to focus on more obscure, neglected titles." Everyone on this forum agreeing on a release should be edited into Bill Murray's speech in Ghostbusters, because it would be far more unusual than dogs and cats living together.

I agree with you on this front. I was thinking more of the stuff people keep whining about for upgrades and titles criterion has said they hold the rights to. There is no reason why they don't release stuff from places other than France, Japan, US, and to a certain extent, Sweden and Italy.

Yet, it could still potentially be a rights issue if New Yorker is releasing these titles. Criterion might not have been able to get them. Again, all speculation.
