I don't see why Criterion can't spit one out among all of it's European, Japanese and American films.

Oh, Spidey, I love you. I've got to agree. I want Criterion to be that... I want them to include that kind of variety because I don't really know how to access/learn about such films outside of hearing about them here/through such releases...which is why I find myself disagreeing with most of what gets requested-- there's no breaking from that arthouse crowd, as you call it, the type of works that aren't necessarily mainstream but get the mainstream attention--that, most importantly, I'm already pretty familiar with.

Also, I'm going to get in shite for saying this, but criterion need to release what they release so people can buy them by the truckloads during the 50% off sales at B&N to display them on the shelf without actually watching them.

Come on, that's not fair, I utilize the B&N sale because I live in Canada and they're ridiculously priced everywhere here and I'm not exactly rolling in cash. Your statement is true for a very select group of individuals, but you're not being fair to the people who love the films, but just don't have the cash to buy them all at full price.

Maybe Criterion could release dummy spines, much like furniture stores have with the fake books in book shelf displays. People could still have their "criterion cred" without having to be bothered with watching great films. Just a thought.

Does Joan of Arc even need a restoration? It's been awhile since I've seen it but I remember the print used on the Criterion dvd was pretty pristine. I love the story behind it, how it was stored in the closet of some mental institution for decades before being discovered. If they can improve on it; then great, but it already looks miles better than most silents do.

Agreed. One of the "regulars" on here who has something to say and movies to suggest. Then again, most of the regulars on here are very informative. This forum makes my work day go by that much quicker.

This is from today's news item here...

One of the most famous and iconic of all silent films, Carl Theodor Dreyer's mesmeric The Passion of Joan of Arc is released in an exclusive new restoration featuring Dreyer's very own Danish intertitles – on Blu-ray for the first time anywhere in the world, in a limited-edition premium "Dual Format" (Blu-ray + DVD) SteelBook edition. Also available as standalone DVD & blu-ray sets.

It's pretty unlikely that Eureka commissioned a restoration. They're just too small.

It seems more likely that the 'exclusive' part has to do with the Danish intertitles. They could have scrounged those up on their own and worked them into a transfer they licensed elsewhere (Gaumont, most likely).

Some films that look great on DVD were only restored in SD so need another restoration to be released on Blu-Ray. I know this is the case with Nosferatu and I assume that's the case with Joan.
