I moderately liked The Dark Knight but that's about it. My best friend is a Batman fan and so I mostly want to see it because I want to comment on it with him. In the other hand, I love super-hero films (Maybe because I love Marvel comics too ) and so the absolute best film in the genre is hands-down Spider-Man 2. One of my favorite action films (And one I honestly think is GREAT) for many reasons. That film is the gold standard and to this day I have not seen any other super-hero film topping that.
Spider-Man 2 was the only of the 3 that I saw and it is very well done. Enjoyable film.

Hey John!

Bought mine yesterday and plan to watch it this weekend. I saw that one screen shot of our heroes on the forked road with the trees and it looks absolutely wonderful. Can't wait to check it out.

Jean Gremillion next week...BTW...the cover art for it on the B & N website shows up as "The Last Days of Disco"...just a heads up.

I picked up my copy of Down by Law this morning, and can't wait to check it out. I just watched the DVD about six weeks ago, but I might have to watch it soon just to see the improvement. I am still hoping that Ghost Dog will make an appearance sooner rather than later.

I don't dislike a film simply because it is slow moving, but it has to offer something.

Name a few of these 'Best films ever made that are slow simplistic with static cameras' you mentioned and I can see which ones I've liked.

I've just heard so much from other directors and people about Ozu. I'm trying to find what the allure is. Its starting to sound like this is not a wise blind buy choice.
The best way to sum up Ozu, is to tell you that no matter how stressed you are beforehand, his films seem to have a calming affect (at least on me). I started streaming Ozu films initially and that is what got me hooked. I have ALL of his films that are available in the US and UK.

Eh, they're pretty similar... roughly in the same 'solid but not particularly exceptional' ballpark with the exception of the end. The US version plays things much more safely in a really lame, melodramatic way.

Not sure if this has been posted... article about CC apparently altering the aspect ratio of Rosemary's Baby...

http://hollywood-elsewhere.com/2012/...rion_cleav.php

Didn't know about this. But it does sound like they're overreacting a bit... Criterion has no problem showing films in 1.37:1 or 1.66:1 so I'd have thought categorising their decision here as 'full facist' as a bit much. But then I don't really know anything about this debate...

It's even more ridiculous when you read through it. He basically goes batshit because the DVD was 1:66 and this BD is going to be 1:85. Well, it turns out the DVD was 1:78 all along.

Is this the same guy who flipped out over Anatomy of a Murder's aspect ration? He's a maroon if it is:

http://hollywood-elsewhere.com/2012/...d_mea_cu_1.php

He's still ranting even after he was corrected.

Holy hell, Batman, that's insane! Who honestly cares (apart from maybe the people who actually made it) that a movie has gotten bad reviews? Especially when it has a pretty high rating on RottenTomatoes (still, not that that means anything). And giving out death threats? Ridiculous.

Yes, that's the same guy. And also the guy who thinks that Psycho looks terrible in its intended 1.85:1 ratio. I actually saw the movie today, in the 1.85:1 ratio, and it looks absolutely fine to me. I think Polanski knows better than him which ratio it should be in, especially since the DVD had the 1.78:1 ratio.

Something different from me today, a movie I had never seen before

Leon Morin, Pretre 1961 (Leon Morin Priest)

I actually had to read the book many many moons ago in highschool but I never saw the movie. Since the release in Blu-ray last year there as been much talk about the movie and TFO had it on last night in HD so got comfortable and watched it. I would not call myself a big Jean Paul Belmondo fan but when I get a chance to see one of his movies I do so. The movie was very well made and I could also see what is so interesting for so many of you. I wish I could say that I liked but not really but I did not hated it either. It's a bit of a neutral stand. Glad I have seen it at least once but I don't see that I would want to see it again.

According to a sign at my local Barnes and Noble, the Criterion Quadrophenia will be a B&N exclusive from 8/14 through 8/27

You get Ozu or you don't I think is one of the best way to explain it. For me his movies is almost like watching a painting in movement, everything is relax, calm, slow. He as a way of talking the most usual of subjects that we deal with everyday, family, love, friendship, sorrow....and some how make them so interesting you can't help yourself but keep on watching. However it is very much a hit or a miss with him, if you don't enjoy the first movie you see there is very good chance you won't really enjoy most of them.

Try the Ozu silent movies, a bit shorter as well and you might enjoy them a bit more. Mostly the same subject matters if maybe done in a lighter way then his talking movies.

I've made plans to visit Ozu's grave this Autumn. It promises to be even more static and peaceful than his films.

True fanboyism at is best Too think most of these "new Batman loyalist" dare call Star Wars fans nerds

Go have a look at the main thread, some are in fit because of some of the reviews comments. Too many seem to take "In Nolan We trust" a bit to serious, time to cut down on the medication boys or maybe up the dosage

He's Lord God King of Derp then. 1.85:1 is a giant conspiracy, better get the tinfoil hats!

I honestly wouldn't have pegged you as a Katy Perry fan. But then, I make far too many assumptions about you.

I bet your book was the French version. I'm trying to find a cheap English translation to no avail, as I really enjoyed the film, after being wishy washy about it since it came out as to whether I should blind buy it or not. I watched it, and decided it's my favourite Melville, and have an interest in reading the novel, but it's difficult to find.

As a final comment, which doesn't have a lot to do with Criterion, Veda Pierce is the c-word that rhymes with bunt, with a capital C. I don't use that word often or lightly, but I just finished reading Mildred Pierce, and let me say, the film and miniseries have nothing, and I do mean nothing, on the character in literary format. I suggest you guys read the novel when you get the chance. I'm becoming a huge fan of James M. Cain.

Yep! The French version. Unlike most of you I was spared Shakespeare, Hemmingway and others but I had to read Voltaire, Hugo, Dumas and others

I suppose you can't get out of it in school, no matter the language
