For all that have Down by Law on dvd already, I finished my Netflix rental of the new BD last night and believe it is a 'must own' upgrade! The PQ was at times almost 3D and very life-like. The depth the new release brings is something you have to view. Pretty much every scene in the swamp is breathtaking. The AQ is a real gem too, especially the dialogue, which is good on the dvd, but really has clarity on the new release. Needless to say, the dvd is being retired and a B&N order will be placed....

I plan to blind-buy Down by Law during my next visit to B&N during the sale. It looks very promising to me.

It's funny, because the bold really does say it all. We all want consistency in the releases. There are many examples of 'bad' BD releases out there from good/bad studios, but the fact that someone is releasing them is always good news. That's why I am always mystified when people want Criterion to release a film that already has a good BD release. Why wouldn't these people want something that has no BD release? No need for further explanation, as there are many examples of these already released movies posted every day in this thread...

I am extremely excited at the (finally) official announcement for Lawrence of Arabia. The collector's edition will look nice next to my copies of all things David Lean: Doctor Zhivago, The Bridge on the River Kwai and the David Lean Directs Noel Coward set. I've been wanting Lawrence since I saw it on HD cable a few years ago and was blown away at the cinematography and the story. It really feels much shorter than its actual runtime.

I just blind bought Criterion's David Lean box set, and have yet to watch it.

In any case, it's a big year for Lean's fans.

Totally agree with your sentiments...and I'm glad given any other organization other than BFI...that Masters of Cinema is releasing this. Despite the fact that we all know they will do a great job, they are also a class act as far as companies go.

I just finished reading The Hobbit (again), and am now reading (for the umpteenth time in my life) The Chronicles of Narnia, which is still one of my favorite series of books from my childhood (along with A Wrinkle in Time and the subsequent books in that "series"). I have yet to read something this summer that I haven't read already.

Yeah, I'm aware it was completed at the time of his death. I wonder what does he mean by "...it won't simply be a Blu-Ray release". Is it going to be a super-sized boxset with every Malick film to date ? They should hurry (Well, not really, if this gets released than we end with no Oshima's Youth Trilogy, Kiarostami's Koker Trilogy or Ray's Apu Trilogy for a long time as they hardly release boxsets at all) because Malick seems to have an director spree . For someone like Fassbinder who worked fast all his live is understandable but Malick took ages to release what he has done so far and having four projects on-going at the same times rises some serious questions about the final quality of such films.

Happy to hear Breaking the Waves is happening eventually. I have not seen this particular film but I generally love Von Trier's films.

It's a wonderful heartbreaking film about hysteria. Definite buy for me if they release it.

Sup, ya'll? Been a nice sale for me as of late. Picked up The 39 Steps and Anatomy of a Murder on Blu-ray, and I also picked up Passion of Joan of Arc on DVD. Watched Anatomy of a Murder for the first time last night and wow, I was totally engaged with this one throughout. The 2 hour 40 minutes flew by. An incredible film. Looking to get another movie or two before this sale ends.

My birthday was this Monday, and last week my girlfriend bought me Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence on blu as an early birthday present. I saw this morning, and holy hell was it great! I have no clue what to think of it, the acting was weird, the story was interesting...but something about it truly moved me. As my first Oshima I truly cannot wait to delve into his Eclipse set once I get back home!

Apu Trilogy will prob be early 2013 (maybe the first "big" release of the year, or pushed all the way to the summer like when The Music Room was released). We still have the Wenders set of 4 films too. And those poor Oshima films have just been sitting.
