Thanks for all the suggestions on region free players! I had no idea they were so affordable and easy to set up. What is the best site to import the Ozu blu-rays? Amazon.co.uk?

I had told my wife about Salo before I bought it last fall, and when I watched it she sat down to watch it with me, much to my surprise. She made it about an hour before going to do something else, which to be honest is bout how long she makes it in a lot of movies

Amazon.uk yes is the best place unless someone know of better prices but UK prices are usually the best ones

Can't recommend Shallow Grave more, a nice little gem that was acted well, shot well, and pretty intense.

The Yakuza book might be a tough fine...but Tokyo Vice is readily available and totally worth your time. It reads a lot like how David Sedaris talks. It is a fascinating read.

If you have more books in mind (and it's not too much of a bother) I'd be happy to see them.

I agree that French films at the time also had a certain flair (and I love the two Melvilles you mentioned, especially Army of Shadows) but it seems the French are better known for that generally than most anyone else. I don't think most people realize that there were stylish and intriguing films that fit into what could be called a Japanese New Wave or a Czech New Wave, as Criterion has been calling them.

It's not news, but I found it about impossible to watch Shallow Grave without thinking about the Coen Bros and Blood Simple. That ending! And Blood Simple is among my fav Coen flix, so I didn't see much in Shallow Grave to disappoint. It could almost be called Blood Simple in Edinburgh.

That said, I don't get excited about Danny Boyle. Waiting for the Opening Ceremonies.

I would agree with Pat on Amazon UK...the only other good option to check out is Zavvi. Sometimes they run sales on BFI titles and their shipping is reasonable.

I know Criterion lost the rights to Nights of Cabiria but wasn't this getting a new restoration, it seems like I read that somewhere here but I can't recall? I would imagine this is one film Studio Canal would want to release to HD? (then again with S.C. it can be a coin toss when they get around to wanting to release many titles Criterion lost.

On a serious note, I was actually recommending Anger for a Lynch fan since Lynch was highly influenced, I don't think someone got the connection.
