Hehe...was just trying to win in an auction for it a minute ago but it would be very cool if it did come out on Blu-ray but unfort. I have no idea if it will be coming out or not.

I thought I've read on one of the Criterion forums that "Yi Yi" was planned.

Yes...I do. And I'll post this just once on this forum... for those who want to beef up their Criterion collection and wants to make things easier on their pocketbook, there is someone on eBay that sells Criterions. We don't know how he/she does it (like an endless supply of used Criterions that is continually being posted nearly every day - these are legit, comes with the books and everything) but they all start out at $11.99 free shipping (inc. Blu-rays, box sets) and everything I have purchased from this seller came complete thus far and all very good condition (some that still had the security seal). In fact, I had no intention of purchasing "Wages of Fear" on BD but I got it for $11.99 and it came with the new case. In fact, a lot of new titles somehow show up on this person's list at times. I discovered this after the B&N sale last year. Good luck! eBay My World - 91pilot

But, if you're still looking for a Region Free blu-ray player, anyway, I got my Momitsu from xpcgear's website. Unless you find one of the other rare $100 players out there, I think you can expect to pay around $250 for region free playability with blu-ray.

The Sherwood BDP 5004 is a clone of the Momitsu 899 and only runs about $160-165 shipped on Amazon. Works exactly like the Momitsu, with the same codes and everything. I own it, and have had nothing but good things from it so far. Actually just watched Suspiria and Antichrist on it yesterday.

What are the chances of any other MOC titles being released by Criterion for blu-ray in the future? If there's zero chance of it happening then I'll gladly start importing them.

It shouldn't matter because (at least for the most part) if it is region locked it will be because of Criterion releasing a stateside version (meaning your bases are covered).

Basically, if you live in region A its a win win situation.

Not sure if it was brought up on the forum but it's cool to see Roger Ebert giving a Criterion fan/reviewer (Matthew Dessem of the blog Criterion Contraption) some props in his latest article on his blog and the Chicago Sun Times.

Transcript: Climbing Mount Criterion - Roger Ebert's Journal

My favorite quote from Dessem: I'd recommend a newcomer start with spine number 1 (Grand Illusion) and go from there--that seems to have worked for me, anyway. Just do yourself a favor and don't start with Salò.

Also, in the Blu-ray Dessem talks about his love for Criterion titles on Blu-ray.

Dangit.
I have a while to wait then.
I ordered mine on Christmas day.
And I only ordered 6 of them, I wonder if I order the other 3 now, if they'll send them all together, or if I will have to wait even longer.

I think this is something that might be ripe for a Blu Ray release. I sure hope so, as it's one of my all-time favorites!

I agree with that. For me Che was always an historical figure I have a mostly favorable view of. He was a product of his time and you have to understand the politics of Latin America during the Cold War to respect the man. That was a time when Latin America was almost entirely ruled by right-wing (basically fascist) U.S-backed puppet dictatorships. Che and people like him have a following because they challenged that establishment. Though I do think the whole "personality cult" of Che nowadays has grown a bit overboard and the guy became a bit too repressive in ideology as time went on.

Also I would note that even Simon Bolivar who is universally beloved in that part of the world had a very tyrannical side. People tend to overlook the fact that he was an iron-fisted dictator after liberating much of that part of the world from Spanish rule.

Question on Barnes & Noble Criterion sales. I have heard a lot about these sales occuring abour every 3 months. How good are the deals typically? Are we talking prices significantly lover than the roughly $22 each that Amazon is charging?

For me, since I also bought Che, it was about $7 more for 3 to buy them at Barnes and Noble, depending on how much tax is in your area.

They sell most of the Criterion for $40 in store with 10 percent off most of them.

It was $81 before tax for Che, Kagemusha and The Seventh Seal at BN, it would've been $78 before shipping at Amazon. I do currently have prime, but Seventh Seal was out of stock and the time and I didn't want to wait.

But that should give you an idea of the difference.

Does anyone know if I'm supposed to get a confirmation e-mail from Criterion about my payment for the replacement cases? I sent payment a couple days ago and just wanted to know if they received my order.

Unlikely. Not many people received conformation emails. A lot of people didn't even get reply's to their emails asking about them. If you just ordered a few days ago, you should probably expect to get your cases early March.

With the B2G1 deal going on now, buying online, and being a B&N member, I got 8 1/2, Che, and Paris, Texas for $68.83.

With the Criterion sale, titles are 50% off + 10% member savings.
For a 39.99 title, you'd be paying $19.48 (with 8.25% IL taxes).

So that's generally better than amazon, plus you don't have to wait on shipping.

If you're not a BN Member, I highly suggest it. It's what, $25 to join for a year? I've saved WAY more than that, even more with my BN Mastercard.

Not sure where you've been getting all your information from, Chad, but there have only been TWO 50%-off Criterion sales at Barnes & Noble so far. The first was in July 2009 and the other was in November 2009. So, that's only 2 sales that were spread out by 5 months.

And, since Barnes & Noble charges the MSRP price for most of their media, you can expect to pay about $20 ($39.95 MSRP - 50%) per blu-ray. However, if you're a B&N member, you're also going to get the extra 10% off. Plus, during the last sale in November, there was a $5-off members' coupon that was available that a lot of people were able to use multiple times. This allowed those members, if they were lucky, to walk out the door with many Criterion blu-rays for around $13 each. There's lot of discussion about all this in the thread back around the November postings.
