It's a lot of fun discovering the work of a new director. I have been doing that in recent months with Luis Bunuel. I wonder who I will discover next

While I agree with what you say about the value of experience, I don't necessarily agree with your conclusions. After all, this would suggest that you can only appreciate a director at the end of their life, and that it isn't possible to include a young director in the list.

Not what I mean at all, the question was "how many works by a director would you think it's necessary to see until you can call them your favorite---nearly all of them, or most?" and my reply to the question is to pick a few from different moments in a director's life. Not once did I said "older mean's better" in fact sometimes it's actually the other way around, some of the bext work was done the younger days. Example for myself, I prefer the younger Woody Allen from the post Annie Hall Woody Allen.

Okay, I understand that. I was just saying that you can appreciate a director who is young, even though they very well might end up making crap when they are old. So in essence, I think we are saying the same thing

I keep trying to talk myself out of it, since August and September have lots of new releases I want. I got 19 titles (17 blu-rays, 2 Eclipse) this sale...but then I keep thinking 'well, I don't have this one yet---or that one---oh, or this one...'. Ugh.

lucky you, i don't have the luxury of buying a sale here. I am too far away in the Philippines. Just bought The Seventh Seal, Godzilla and 12 Angry Men, aside from the non-Criterions like Some Like It Hot, The Apartment, The Ladykillers [1955 Studio Canal], The Manchurian Candidate [1962], and Grease.

I was gonna say Black Moon as it didn't resonate with me at all. However, the more I think about it I have this feeling like I missed some small thread of something that would have pulled it together for me.
