Would that imply that his movies are part of the 10% of trash that Hollywood puts out? .

And while his movies are well made, his earlier movies are too much style over substance. With the biggest offender Panic Room, which only features a camera shot going through a coffee machine just because they could. Or Fight Club, where on repeated viewings you can't do anything other than notice how (I'll spoiler this just to be safe)
[Show spoiler]there are too many references littered in the movie to the "shock ending" that the characters played by Brad Pitt and Edward Norton are the same.
Plus, I also think it's incredibly ironic how people agree with the nonsense Durden spouts throughout the movie, when it's supposed to be taken as satire.
I do love Zodiac, though. That it was made by the same person as Se7en is almost impossible to believe. Of course, it's an almost three hour movie where the killer is never caught, so of course it bombed at the box office, but still, it's great to see a director not cater to the lowest common denominator.
Also, I love the way how he uses CGI, for the most part. Several instances of CGI used in Zodiac, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and The Social Network are basically seamless, and that's how they should be used. It's good that he learned from how not to do it in Panic Room.

Edit: I guess to expand a little bit: I feel I expected a much stronger and sharper image, but the one I saw looked soft. I compare it to screenshots on this site and DVDBeaver, and my copy looks pretty much the same as both, so I'm not sure what to think.
Might not be his best movie, visual wise it look's stunning but the story is a little confuse at time. I suspect he might have also been a bit rusty in his direction, there was such a long time in between The Thin Red Line and his previous film. Maybe he needed so time to "get back in the game" sort of speak

Well...I finally got to see the first film in the Gremillon Eclipse set, "Remorques". I can't believe I haven't seen more posts about it. A very good start for the set and another masterful performance by Jean Gabin. This set is a no brainier for around $21 or so, during the sale. Highly recommended.

Glad to hear this, rkish. I picked up the Gremillon Eclipse set yesterday. Total blind buy, but the film descriptions sound like something I would enjoy.

I had just gotten back from a business trip and decided to visit a B&N that I never go to near the airport. They had a large Eclipse selection, including Eclipse 1: Early Bergman, a set I have never seen in any B&N. So I grabbed it along with the Gremillon.

Haha, I figured I didn't make my post specific enough. I was talking about picture quality. It looked nice, but I guess I'm so used to seeing a more sharper image with films similar to this one that, to me, it looked kinda soft, so it sort of puzzles me why this is considered "reference quality" to most people. Maybe I just need a bigger TV than my 32" to really get it?

I thought the picture quality of The Thin Red Line was almost life-like. The PQ was truly remarkable.

Fincher is amazing, one of the best directors working.

My Malick ratings:

The Thin Red Line A+
Days of Heaven A
The Tree of Life A-
The New World B-

And, unfortunately, I haven't seen Badlands.

I am waiting for my set to arrive. Saw the movies but years ago (years meaning in the 70's) so my memory is as we shall say "not there". I cannot way to see them again.

I'll be curious to hear what you think about the Gremillon set as well. Please let me know what you think about the early Bergman set. I'm beginning to think that I like his earlier films more than his later ones.

I actually never seen the DVD or Blu-ray. Last time I saw the movie it was on ordinary TV so I have no idea what the HD on it might look like. It does seem however that most people are happy with it but there is also "eyes" that come into play with this. I think that we all have different vision and while certain things seem alright for some others see the image in a different way. I know myself with my glasses and my vision I may not be reference material on judging images the correct way?

You won't be disappointed Pat...if the other two films are half as good as Remorques, then I think it will be a perfect trifecta.

New Zealand Film Festival. It's the only thing that totally got me riveted. Beasts of the Southern Wild, The Hunt, On the Road didn't really do it for me. I have yet to see Beyond The Hills and Holy Motors.

Ohh, if you see the latter...I was actually curious to see that one and would like to know your thoughts. I've heard many great things about Beasts myself, but can't say it interests me much.

And...is that top 10 in your signature your top 10 favorite films? It's an interesting variety there...

For those who had DVDs of the following and who have since purchased the Criterion blu-ray, can you tell me which ones you think are worth the upgrade? Assuming I consider them equals as far as the films go, which of these has the best improvements in picture/sound quality and special features?

39 Steps
The Lady Vanishes
Being John Malkovich

Lady Vanishes. I cant say about Being John Malkovich - I can only answer for the Hitchcock films. 39 steps looks good but Lady Vanishes is just incredible in HD

Will do.

Yeah - Beasts started of roaring but ended with a whimper.

Any news if Criterion will have some Mizogutchi on the horizon?
