This thread is awfully quiet considering they just announced that Chris Marker, the director of La Jetee and Sans Soleil has passed away.

I didn't know that =(

My wife and I have the La Jetee bar on our itinerary to visit on our upcoming visit to Japan. It will feel much different now I'm sure...

Sad to hear about Chris Marker. We'll always have the double bill gem to remember him by.

Truly sad news . It is always sad when the medium loses an important and influential figure, in this case a great director. This year has been of great loses, I still can't get over how sudden the death of Theo Angelopoulos came to be.

Why can't they charge decent prices (19.99) all year long. Criterion?!?!

Read somewhere that James Mangold will be remaking Le Cercle Rouge. Love that movie so not sure how I feel about it (though he did work wonders with 3:10 to Yuma). We'll see, I guess.

The regular Amazon price for single-disc titles isn't usually that much higher than $19.99 and they almost always have a few single-disc Criterions in the $18-$20 range.

Amazon also has somewhat regular Criterion sales with a fairly decent selection of titles at or below $20.

DeepDiscount puts them on sale a couple times a year.

B&N has two Criterion sales, two B2G1 sales and a 40% off all DVD/BD sale every year.

Criterion even has 50% flash sales once or twice a year.

Sure, I wish every Criterion was always on sale but we're not really all that far from that now.

If you're willing to wait a bit and keep your eyes open you can get pretty much any Criterion you want at a good price.

This. I didn't know about it either until seeing it here just now. I myself have been influenced by both those films.

Never remake an auteur's film.

Really I was just being melodramatic.
Very rarely do Amazon prices for Criterions drop to the 19.99 range usually hovering around $27.99 for all but the barebones releases. Sometimes they will drop to the 23.99 range. Deep discount is the same unless you happen upon a good coupon code. It would just be nice if they were always that price. Just a little wishful thinking on my part nothing more. At least it gives me time to save money for the next B&N sale.

The fact is by pricing their titles so high you see $19.99 and think its cheap. So their business plan obviously works. Not trying to knock Criterion. I'm glad they can make higher retail prices then the average studio. I'm just not willing to pay most of those hefty prices which leaves me for months wanting a title hoping it will drop in price.

Which reminds me did you see where WB is talking about making a prequel to The Shining . Make it stop! it hurts my head! I guess this is better then the movies being released based off board games like Battleship and the soon to be released Candy Land. Somehow I doubt there will be a Criterion release of Candy Land in the future.

Anyone else get final day nerves?

I buckled and ordered another 7 titles! I had to put another order in for Down By Law anyway, ended up costing me a little more than I imagined- but being based in the UK makes it better to take advantage of the postage costs in one swoop.

19 titles in this sale- crikey Worked out at probably about $430 and that included Berlin Alexanderplatz, the Lean set and Samurai Trilogy.

Aside from In the Mood for Love, Tenenbaums and Rosemary's Baby, that's me done til November though. I think

Yeah, all of this does get to be too much. King is writing a sequel to The Shining, which I'm for since the original creator is doing it, but when it's a property out of the originators hands...I get nervous. La Cercle Rouge is already great and I see no reason to remake/redo it for American audiences, but I think we're the slight few out there who don't mind subtitles and enjoy art for arts sake.

Altogether I got the following during this sale:

David Lean Directs Noel Coward
Samurai Trilogy
Yojimbo/Sanjuro box set
Seven Samurai
Three Outlaw Samurai
Harakiri
Kagemusha
Night of the Hunter
The Seventh Seal
M
The Wages of Fear
The Lady Vanishes
39 Steps
For All Mankind
Letter Never Sent
Paths of Glory
Stagecoach
Blow Out

Overall I am very happy with what I picked up. I have watched Seven Samurai and Letter Never Sent so far. Seventh Seal and M are next. I plan to watch all of my new Criterions before watching other new movies.

I was able to use the $5 BN buzz code today on Wages of Fear and The Lady Vanishes. I also used 4 $8 coupons and 4 $5 coupons and $39.50 of membership savings for a total of $96.50 additional savings over the 50% off!

I can see it now. It will be about the history of the hotel using a very similar family except with some current top stars to draw in the audiences. One of the kids will be strange and have invisible friends just like the original and just for good measure this time the wife will go ballistic. Then because modern audiences demand it everything will have to be explained which means they will link the hotels' haunting to some very long past event and we will be forced to watch mountains of exhibition explaining everything to us.

I know I wouldn't want to be the Director. Knowing your film will be compared directly with Kubrick's.

ok sorry for going off topic.
I had to stop myself from going to B&N today. With so much coming out in the next few months I had to cut myself off.
I'm still fighting the urge to go.
