Default 8 1/2 subtitles

I finally got to watch 8 1/2 last night and was mystified by the subtitles. I tried searching to see if there was a thread on this, but could not find one. The subs are so far down on the display, you can barely read the second line. I have an OPPO w/Pioneer Kuro 50". My settings are fine, as I put Gomorrah back in just to double check those subs. Is this a known problem, or am I missing something. The movie is fantastic, but as I do not speak Italian, so following some of the dialogue was frustrating and not enjoyable after a while. Any info can help.

I hope 8 1/2 isn't going out of print. Just noticed Amazon is out of it.

As soon as a title goes OOP, it'll be listed as so on Criterion's site. So, before anyone ever gets worried by a retailer's lack supply, I'd go check the film's listing on Criterion's site first. And "8 1/2" isn't one of them.

The standard DVD of "Pygmalion" did, however, become OOP just recently according to Criterion's site.

Thanks, I think I see it now. Looks like The Third Man is the only Blu Criterion out of print. Shame because I really want that one.

Has anyone received any of their orders from deepdiscount.com? I ordered when the sale went live and just ordered one title and still have not received it.

Nice! You have until Feb 16 to get caught up before the next wave

WOW, I can not believe someone is already selling the collection...

Was the item you ordered out of stock?
I ordered 4 dvds, and one was out of stock and didn't ship till yesterday.
You should have received emails upon shipment of your movies.

I got two separate emails for the two days they sent mine out.

Although I still haven't received the movies.

And, since they updated their website, nothing shows up under your order history...how convenient.

Gomorrah is in a different aspect ratio than 8 1/2, so either your overscan is on too much, or you're zooming in.

I've recently been waiting for the 50% off sales at B&N, but Paris, Texas may just be an outright purchase for me. Love the film.

First the seventh seal and now 8 1/2. Either the runs for these blus are low (criterion must still be checking the blu ray waters so to speak) or they are completly misjudging the blu ray market for these titles.

$70 for The Third Man on Half.com....... RIDICULOUS in my opinion, for a title to demand that price so soon after going OOP.

I was thinking this, but Kagemusha is the same ratio and those subs are fine. I never have any overscan or zoom applied, as 'dot by dot' is always set. Maybe a bad netflix disc? I doubt it, but you never know.

It's definitely an addiction.
My house was robbed in November. Insurance has been very helpful, but slow. So I haven't had a TV in two months. But I'm still buying Criterions.

I haven't got my order either. Says it shipped the day after I ordered which was a week and a couple days ago. I emailed them and they said it should take 10-15 business days to get to me through USPS. Its been about 8 or 9 so I'll give it some more time. Hope that helps you.

Thanks! I'm used to receiving things within 3-5 days but I guess deepdiscount.com varies.

Btw, for anyone who is ordering the "Eclipse Series 19: Chantal Akerman in the Seventies" set, GreenCine released a podcast interview with her.

Thanks to those who chimed in on "Che". I've decided, to go with Paris, Texas for now and also going for the Rosselini "war trilogy" (although if the BN sale is coming in March, I would rather wait to get it at half off).

I did find it interesting to read reviews about the commentary track on the first disc of "Che", and would it be a Criterion first for a commentary to have someone who actually didn't like the film and was more critical of it because of its inaccuracies?

In most cases, I would have purchased it now...but since my introduction to others on this thread to Masters of Cinema/Eureka and Kino releases...I'm now having to budget and pick and choose. More quality choices for 2010... Yikes!

Btw, for those with a good size collection of Criterions, definitely would love to see how you have your collections organized. David Blakesee of Criterion Reflections just posted his and Mike's collection.

Just got my 9 replacement cases yesterday (ordered December 4th). I like the result:

Now I just need to order a blank case and print that custom Benjamin Button cover art...

Has everyone noticed how much higher the 'C' is on the spine of "Bottle Rocket" from the rest of the covers? I just thought I'd throw that out there to drive the OCD crowd crazy.

Hahaha! That's hilarious, Beta! But, you're right... that's the one book I didn't receive from my Time Life subscription because I canceled too early. Well, now it looks like I'm screwed!
