Default Anatomy of a Murder

Would love some opinions on whether Anatomy of a Murder would be a good pick up.And yes, I know The B&N sale is over. I have never seen this movie but it looks intriguing. I like court room drama's but not sure I wanna drop 25 bucks on a movie that gets mixed reviews. It seems most like the movie while some others say its dated and cliche and lacks direction. Amazon doesn't have it available as a rental unless your a Prime member which I am not so that's not an option either. Any insights would be appreciated. Thanks.

I haven't heard about it being dated/cliche. I think it's a great film and the quality of the presentation is one of Criterion's best. It's a bit open-ended, which to me helped the film...because it's exactly what you say, a court-room drama, and it doesn't need that added melodrama you'd expect from some of these films.

Looks like it'll be a January release! Too bad though, I wanted it announced before the end of the year

Yes! I hope it's the director's cut they are putting on Blu-ray! Sweet!

I would be surprised if Criterion doesn't include both the 149min (theatrical) and 219min (director's) cuts. I'd really like to see the 325min cut, which is probably closest to Cimino's vision (?)

Ebert
Heaven's Gate has, of course, become a notorious picture, a boondoggle that cost something like $36 million and was yanked out of its New York opening run after the critics ran gagging from the theater. Its running time, at that point, was more than four hours. Perhaps length was the problem? Cimino went back to the editing room, while a United Artists executive complained that the film had been "destroyed" by an unfairly negative review by New York Times critic Vincent Canby. Brother Canby was only doing his job. If the film was formless at four hours, it was insipid at 140 minutes. At either lengthit is so incompetently photographed and edited that there are times when we are not even sure which character we are looking at
Has anyone seen both cuts?

I heard the 300+ version will never exist due to the footage being destroyed.

Speaking of Japanese films, I hope Criterion releases Gate of Hell. I've wanted to see that since I first read about it. The UK release comes out in December. Are they even rumored to have it? If there's no announcement I guess I'll just get the UK version.

No rumors. I would just pick up the MoC release (which will be one of the best releases of the year IMO). Hopefully Teinosuke Kinugasa's A Page of Madness will follow. I wouldn't wait for Criterion, they haven't even released a Yoshida film yet and have like 500 Japanese films on Hulu by 2-3 filmmakers (Shinoda, Kinoshita, etc).

Got a question about Import CDs...I've ordered from them before and am impressed with their pricing, early shipping, and condition of packaging. I've never ordered more than one disc at a time. If you preorder a number of things in the same order, do they all ship at once or do they ship individually as per their release dates? Is it any cheaper to order in bulk?

Thanks!

Gotta ask Spidey...what is the huge interest/draw of "Gate of Hell", at least for you?

I don't know about whether they ship all at once or not but shipping on the first item is $2.99 and each additional item is $1.49 so there is an advantage to ordering multiple items.

So what's the conventional thinking on Heaven's Gate these days? Is it still widely regarded as an incoherent disaster or have critics had second thoughts over the years?

Simple, because I love Teinosuke Kinugasa's A Page of Madness and want more. Also this is the first film of his that I believe is being released with English subs.

Thanks Bud! I'm considering ordering Lonesome and Quadrophenia from them, as they both release on the same date and I'd save about $6 if I order from them over Amazon. I'd gladly throw in a few more preorders, if I knew they'd ship separately.

They ship individually as they become available. It took them a few weeks to get my pre-order of Once Upon a Time in Anatolia and I am still waiting for The Turin Horse to ship.

I'm not as big a fan of Samurai and/or "period" films, but I'm open minded. Is there any other film(s)/director(s) that would be a close comparison to this particular film and/or Kinugasa's style of directing?
