No argument for me Yami...I think it is the better film and to quote Orson Welles (in the voice of Peter Bogdanovich), "Oh God, it's the saddest film ever!" This was the second film I ever purchased from MoC (after La Planete Sauvage).

Hitchcock is not a huge surprise, a British director who spend a good part of his working days in Hollywood and where most of his "major movies" were made. I would expect the popularity.

Ozu however, a Japanese director who is not Kurosawa, never made a samurai movie, never worked in Hollywood and made "extremely Japanese" stories and movies, that is a surprise

I always suspected that Ozu was "to Japanese" and that his movies are hard to understand for foreign audience even more so in the time frame they were made. Some after the war as Japan was struggling with the old ways and seeing the new ways of life coming at them like a fist in the face and having a hard time adjusting to them.

Hey...can anyone suggest a good/reliable/cheap all region DVD player? My wife buys/watches a lot of UK Brit TV shows (Inspector Morris, etc.) and the Toshiba XDE 500 player that I bought her on EBay about a year or so ago, just crapped out. We buy a lot of the UK versions, as they are significantly cheaper, than their US counterparts. I think I paid about $45 for it. I see a Pioneer 420 VK on Amazon for $82, but wouldn't mind saving a few bucks, if I can.

Because that was back when New Line/Fine Line were Time Warner owned but not under Warner Bros umbrella. A few years back Time Warner folded New Line into Warner Bros. Before then WHV distributed the films but it was a different management and operation for New Line. That is why Criterion has Short Cuts and My Own Pvt Idaho also. These agreements could actually go back to even before Time Warner owned New Line when it was owned by Turner.

What about that insignia people keep talking? It does bds and DVDs for less than that pioneer.

I have the Seiki, which does region free DVD plus pal conversion and it's dedicated to region B blus.

And I know what you mean about cheap. Murdoch Mysteries, which is a Canadian made show is far cheaper to buy in DVD firm in thr uk. It's 65 bucks for a sinker season here, while you get three seasons for that price in the uk.

As much as I love Hitchcock with so many other sets coming out I'll have to wait for a price drop. I just don't have the funds and personally would rather buy a few other releases first. Like for instance the Universal Monster boxset. I've always loved those films. Mainly because I'm a sucker for dark atmosphere and horror films and a huge fan of Karloff as well. When I do get the set it will probably be the US boxset. I think those boxsets , if its like the Alien one, are well done and I like having the smaller package. <--*edit* don't say it not even one word!!

Weird list from Tarantino. I would of expected some more obscure titles. Though I have to agree with His Girl Friday. Wish we could get a Criterion Bluray of that. I'm assuming Michael Mann's appreciation of Avatar is strictly on a technical merit and not because of its deep thought provoking story line.

I tend to mostly agree with Scorsese and Coppola's lists. No matter the source of the list Sunrise deserves to be on it IMO.

A film I would love to see get a full Criterion treatment for would be the 1953 version of War of the Worlds. It was given a full bare-bones release on DVD by Paramount and if ever there was a film screaming for a re-master and such this would be a prime candidate.

Thoughts?

It would be prudent for Criterion to upgrade Tokyo Story sooner rather than later now. I mean, they won't stick a banner on their cases or anything like the Hollywood studios do, but it would be a great move to take advantage of this 'publicity' in their avenue of the marketplace. Particularly since this is the first time such an opportunity has come up for them.

I read elsewhere that Tokyo Story may resonate with the largely Western voting bloc of this poll above other Ozu films because of its Western sensibilities. I actually haven't seen the picture yet - it's on my fast-docket - but from what I've read about it, it features a different approach to elders and the family than the more traditional one found in say Late Spring.

I recommend you try to get an english-friendly copy of a great Mexican film called Cuando los Hijos se Van (1941) by Juan Bustillo Oro. It touches upon very similar themes and is a classic in our cinema. Highly recommended .

Funny though, I like his list better than the others. He should have just gave his top 10 "exploitation" films that he gave GrindhouseDatabase's website.

Well you didn't post all of the lists. With Vertov and Fassbinder in his top 10, Tarr wins.
