I would agree! A great diverse list of films and he even rounds it out with Berlin Alexanderplatz.

Yup. Ebert actually had a post on his blog going through his reasoning for his picks a while back. He added The Tree of Life and dropped The Third Man, I believe.

Alright Wise Guy! Which version of the set are you getting?

And now there seems to be another UK version that is showing up for a few £s cheaper and smaller packaging...though there might be less booty...and it's HMV over Amazon UK.

With all this talk about Tokyo Story, it looks to be the best-selling Criterion on Amazon right now.

The biggest announcement of the year for Criterion is coming up in 12 days. As you know, November is typically a Big month for Criterion.

What are you hoping for?

I think we can expect this:

At least 1 from Sony/Columbia:

-Most likely On the Waterfront (From Here to Eternity, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and In a Lonely Place are remote possibilities).

A blu-ray box set
-Most likely Pasolini's Trilogy of Life (Apu Trilogy is a remote possibility)

1-2 High Profile upgrades
-Contenders: The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, Wild Strawberries, Bicycle Thieves, Rashomon, Le Samourai, Jules and Jim, Hiroshima mon amour, Tokyo Story, Picnic at Hanging Rock

Lastly... 1 surprise or 1 from the long overdue group:
-I'm not even going to mention them because they've been said enough!

As of right now they have them in stock online for $60 and free shipping

this is the same model I have (4 of them actually) and I recommend
Thanks Detriot! I'll check it out...would be nice to have both DVD and BD region free options in the bedroom.

I'm hoping that we finally get Edward Yang's A Brighter Summer Day but I get the feeling we're still in for a rather long wait

Trilogy of Life is a pretty good bet unless there was a major problem that caused the day.

I'm praying for On the Waterfront release, but I'm also thinking Y Tu Mama Tambien should be due anytime now, so I'm thinking Nov. announcement.

On another note. I'm looking into this Hulu Plus, anyone have it? It seems like it would be a pretty good deal for $7.99/month with variety of great titles including shows. I have netflix currently with 1 blu at a time plus watch instantly, but it's just so hard to make time to watch everything. Can't decide, guess I can just try the free trial...

I'm hoping the box set is The BRD Trilogy. I doubt it thou. Hope they release a Kurosawa. Personally, I liked Throne of Blood more than Rashomon so I'd prefer that. Maybe Le Samarai (which I have held off on watching). Maybe they'll finally release Y Tu Mama Tambien. I know neither have been hinted but two of my most wanted upgrades is Band of Outsiders and The Cranes are Flying. Either would make me happy.

Hulu Plus is great. It's really worth the 8 dollars for all the Criterions they have alone. The only problem is trying to decide what to watch. Its worth it imo. I mean you can watch 100's of criterion films including eclipse sets at the click of a button. I only use it to watch Criterions and Community but other then that the shows and movies are lacking, but that's all I need anyway.

Have a vague recollection of seeing Heaven's Gate, perhaps as a laserdisc rental a couple years after it came out, and don't recall having much of a problem with it. Looking forward to the blu.

(Also don't recall Siskel's take on it, but do recall I usually preferred his perspective on films to Ebert's. Have enjoyed reading Ebert's books during the past few years though, would be interesting to go back and see if I'd still feel the same way today.)
