I used to own the Yojimbo DVD and the blu-ray is a significant jump in quality. It looks great in motion. Sanjuro looks nice, too.

As for Samurai Trilogy- get it. It's a great set.

Getting back to November, it's too soon for a Zodiac release anyways, since The Game comes out 2 months prior. Criterion wouldn't do another Fincher release so close together.

Also, there are plenty of "Hollywood" titles I'd like to see Criterion release before Zodiac which have yet to hit DVD, let alone BD. There are also several OOP DVDs I'd like to see Criterion get their hands on for a BD release from MGM. Zodiac can wait.
Sorry...didn't mean it as a rub. . I just realized there weren't a lot of dates. Maybe they will continue the tour in 2013?

I think November would be a good time to release Tokyo Story, while the current interest in it is strong. This financially would be a win-win for them. They are also due for a Kurosawa...Red Beard, Ikiru, Druken Angel and/or The Bad Sleep Well would be welcome.

I most definitely agree! I think Chris is trying to stress the point that there are SO MANY films that will NEVER see a release by "the big boys" and these are the films that Criterion should concentrate on. Companies like WB are not going to "waste their time" on great films like Letter Never Sent, so we are lucky that Criterion realizes this and makes an effort to put them out.

Why reinvent the wheel and release a film with a decent to good package, as this only cuts back on the other, more obscure films that are dying to be released.

I have to admit Shell...I'm not a big Samurai film fan...but I tried to watch as much of the Trilogy as I could and I was impressed by the great acting of Mifune and the great PQ of those films. They looked wonderful on TCM! I might even consider the Trilogy box during the next sale...just wish they'd drop the price a tad.

Zodiac always seems to come up every once in awhile regarding titles that should be in the Criterion Collection. Honestly, though, other than the current release being OOP, what else would Criterion add that Paramount didn't already in their initial release... other than the higher price tag? I liked Zodiac and own the Paramount disc, but I don't adore Zodiac as much as others seem to do. So, I don't know if there's some other features out there in the world that Paramount blatantly left off their release or if there's some other cut of the film that people are dying to see. I'm ignorant to what Criterion could offer this film, so I need to be enlightened. If anything, a Criterion release of Zodiac would probably end up like their release of Benjamin Button, which we all know was Paramount's release with Criterion branding. Would it be acceptable if Paramount would just repress more discs? Why did it even go OOP, by the way?

It's called an attempt at humor. Apparently, I failed. Maybe, you've never seen the SNL Weekend Update sketch "Really??? w/ Seth & Amy"? Maybe, there are too many reruns of SCTV?

We all have our favorite films that we would love to be released in a decent package with adequate picture & audio quality, but when there are so many other films without a blu-ray release [*cough* Thrashin' (1986)] it doesn't seem needed to re-release that can still be found for a price if someone is willing to pay.

Unfortunately, WB don't just not "waste their time" with releasing Greed etc., they don't bother licensing them out either

I doubt it. You have to remember how temperamental Nez can be. Besides, no one comes to Halifax, the city is run by conservatives who still think we live in the 18th century. I never took your post as a rub, I actually knew about it via Nez's facebook. He went on about his gaspacho and thr tragedy of his broken crackers, and the as an afterthought mentioned the tour. Quite amusing I do say.

P@t and I are as maligned in our own country as by you, he's French and I'm a Maritimer, and those Uppity Upper Canadians always look down on us, so no offence taken there.

However, leave SCTV alone! SNL ended up with several cast members and characters from it anyway, and some of their stuff holds up a lot better than SNL's!

I agree. There is no reason for Zodiac to be OOP. If Paramount does not want to keep on the shelf then they should left Criterion distribute it, or perhaps let Warner have domestic home entertainment rights since they have International. It is one of the best American Films of the last decade.

Where are you from again? I'm surprised you know about it unless the debacle concerning disabled access to the second, newer location and it's boycott have made national/international news.

I think the place is overrated, and can think of better restaurants in the city.

From Buffalo/Niagara Falls area, but i spent some time living in Ottawa, and used to go to Montreal and Halifax a lot during my time there.

Overrated indeed, but i still crave them from time to time!

It always amazes me how people can be judged by a forum post. Aren't we all fans of film ? Why have frivolous debates over whether or not Zodiac should be a Criterion release ? C'mon guys lets all get along
In the middle of all the pages of bickering there is some information about the topic -The Criterion Collection
Apparently next year Criterion will release the Man Who Knew Too Much from 1934 -this is a great Hitchcock suspense thriller with Peter Lorre
Any fans of this film ?
Peace, all

I don't think (most) people here believe Zodiac is unworthy of a Criterion release, especially given other films in the collection. It's just that there's really nothing Criterion could improve upon the version Paramount already released here. It has great specs and is overladen with extras. Paramount just needs to bring it back from OOP for whatever reason: all putting a big 'C' on the cover will do is raise the MSRP.

Well I would like to see some of the films MoC is releasing come to Criterion like Gate of Hell, The Passion of Joan of Arc. Still can't figure out after that long extensive ( 5 years?) restoration of Die Nibelungen we have yet to have a announcement on this side of the Atlantic. Also I'm dying to see Vampyr and the Josef von Sternberg box set on Blu. Being a huge Clouzot fan I'm still hoping someday to see Le Corbeau in HD or maybe Quai des Orfèvres. Then of course: Wild Strawberries, La Samourai, Brazil. Another one i want to see is Hawks 1932 Scarface. Far superior film then the later remakes. There is a ton of interesting history and backstory to it. However the film never gets the attention is deserves IMO. Then one of my guilty pleasures Blood for Dracula. Udo Kier cracks me up in that one everytime.

Tell me about it. After 3 releases of Casablanca I keep hoping someday they will get around to The Big Sleep. Now that would make a great Criterion title. I'd also take To Have and Have Not or Key Largo. Are there any Bogart films in the Criterion collection not counting laserdisc releases? Also considering the recent David Lean boxset I wouldn't mind Ryan's Daughter. A film that gets no love because everyone expected another huge epic from Lean at the time.

I think it's a great release for Criterion. The majors usually think 50's to 60's when it come's to Hitchcock (and it's also what most people want) and don't always remember that he made great movies in the 20's and 30's a time frame I find much more interesting then his older movies

It's pretty amazing some of the releases from MoC, they really are doing a great job. One of the reason I went out to find a cheap region free player.

That pretty much say's it all on the subject. Why waste time with a Criterion release over something the "majors" are doing properly anyway? All that it's for in the end is for the "prestige" of saying "it's a Criterion release ". Big deal!
