Screw all this Kurosawa upgrade talk. They need to upgrade Tin Drum with both the original and directors cut.

Cheers!

As far as my wish list, Tokyo Story and Throne of Blood for starters.

My predictions:

On the Waterfront
Heaven's Gate
El Sur
Rashomon
The Spirit of the Beehive
Eclipse: Cinema Novo
The highlighted ones would be on a "Release of the Year" camp . That slate may have been possible before but Criterion no longer seems to have a priority on those kind of titles .

I had never heard of Heaven's Gate until I googled it. The reviews are terrible and it failed at the box office. Think the market is big enough for this film?

It's had something of a reevaluation recently and some hail it as a masterpiece. It will sell enough.

Have you seen it by chance? I didn't want to give it a bad name, as movies can be very personal for everyone. I might give it a watch somewhere online.

I think El Sur and The Spirit of the Beehive will come eventually, no idea when though. I've held off on the Spanish releases to see what extras Criterion include. The Quince Tree Sun would be nice too.

I'm not sure about the Cinema Nova set but the 'long awaited title' is in an Eclipse set and we've been waiting for Macunaíma for a long time.

If Macunaima ends up being an Eclipse release I will probably lose a part of myself . That kind of film deserves main-line treatment, especially if we consider it has been in the works for about 6 years .

Did that ever come out on DVD? I found a fascinating documentary about the making of that movie on YouTube a few months back. They didn't pull any punches when talking about Cimino's handling of that entire production.

Pages are up on Criterion's site for Ken Russell and Jacques Rivette. Most probable releases for them are Mahler and Paris nous appartient

EDIT:

Turns out there's also pages up for Michel Gondry, Bruno Dumont, Michael Mann, Christopher Nolan, Giuseppe De Santis, Elia Kazan, Michael Cimino, Kiyoshi Kurosawa and Howard Hawks. I'm guessing they won't all be in one month.

Hmm, Chris Nolan? What else could it be but Following, but there was already a pretty good DVD SE for that flick. I really hope if they're doing a Michael Mann flick that it's The Insider.

Yeah, it seems they have pages for A LOT of directors. I got all excited about Rivette but then people started to find lots and lots of other names . Still, fingers crossed for some Rivette. I would settle with Paris Nous Appartient but if they want to blow my mind they can always release Out 1 .
