Isn't this technically the initial theatrical cut? The running time listed on Criterion's site seems almost the same as its length when it first hit theaters before Cimino withdrew it to work on a shorter edit. As for no commentary, it's possible he's too scarred by the experience to revisit the film and talk for nearly 4 hours about it.

Rashoman for the Nov release, along with The Game for September and Rosemary's Baby in October.

Rashomon and the Trilogy of Life!?

Was hoping for a David Lynch surprise but those will do

Since Criterion have been licensing lots of titles from MGM recently, I would guess Women in Love and maybe The Music Lovers (I think these are the only two Russell properties they control??)

All except Heaven's Gate for me. I've never had any interest whatsoever to even watch it. Trilogy of Life, Week End and Rashomon fall nicely into what is presumed the next B&N Sale. Works for me!

Not a huge Rashomon fan, but it's almost worth buying just for the cover. And I'm not sure if this is an endorsement or not, but Heaven's Gate is like a less successful Days of Heaven. If you like that movie, you may want to check out Heaven's Gate, otherwise, you'll probably want to stay away.

Maybe the movie is long enough to warrant two discs by itself?

or 'The Boyfriend' for that matter

the DVR from Warner Archives is generally eye popping and really deserves a hidef release since it's color on overload.

I'm sitting out November. But I will use that month to catch up on titles released prior to that with the B&N sale (The Game, Rosemary's Baby, Eating Raoul, etc.)

The question wasn't directed at me but here are some of the titles we know are coming that I'm waiting on:

Red River
On the Waterfront
Y Tu Mama Tambien
The Blob

Plus it seems like CC usually throws in a surprise/shocker but that didn't happen this month. Perhaps everyone's research and pestering of Mulvaney and crew is getting too thorough.

Maybe, but the film is still pretty long so the 2-discs choice might be to allow the film more space instead of more extras. I will not get it but the troubled production of the film was the "important" part of this release (At least in my opinion).

Well, the feature is listed at three-and-a-half hours. Any supplements at all would pretty much call for an additional disc, no?

Not that the supplements sound bad, exactly. A little thin maybe but not terrible. Although it might have been interesting to see people not involved in the film talking about it but whatayagonnado.

That's true!

And unrelated, I hope we can get another De Palma film from Criterion at some point. I'd go for Raising Cain or Snake Eyes.

I bet if Kindergarten Cop was made a member of the Criterion Collection you'd probably hear some snobs that would otherwise deride all of a sudden talk about it's hidden meanings and how it's one of the landmarks of late 20th century cinema.

I will say this though, Heaven's Gate is a hugely flawed film with a barely there script and performances, but it's cinematography by Vilmos Zsigmond is among the best of it's era, and for that reason alone it deserves to be on blu ray. Criterion probably stepped up to the plate beacause no one else would.
True. But I found it funny, because Kindergarten Cop was a generally well-received movie that while not Criterion-worthy, does have a following... if it was Last Action Hero or Junior I would've understood the derision more. But then you see Heaven's Gate, a movie that carries a four-letter word stigma in Hollywood (I remember Waterworld was dubbed "Kevin's Gate" when production went overbudget and it became obvious the film would be a mess) and ruined Cimino's career and bankrupted United Artists.

Really? The synopsis and reviews I read made it sound nothing like Day's of Heaven. Why so much hatred here for the film? I've never seen it myself.

IMO Snakes Eyes would be Criterion's 21st century Armageddon release.

I've only had to wait three and a half years for Rashomon to come in an English-friendly edition. I came close to importing the Japanese disc so many times...Sold, along with Heavens Gate and (eventually) the Trilogy of Life and Shochiku Horror Eclipse sets.

Unfortunately, The Music Lovers has already been relegated to DVD-R status.
