I hate to sound negative nice releases for NOV but lately their lack of so few upgrades is kind of dissapointing. Also kind of sick of eclipse sets being DVD only. Sure some say some film elements may not be the best for HD but just do a scan of what material you have in HD (kind of like KINO with some titles - minus restoration) and release it on BLU I am willing to pay the difference.

Heaven's Gate cover art isn't as cool as I'd hoped it could be. I guess I've seen that original title logo for so long I expected it again.

More in the time period, look, and slow moving manner of the film. Unlike Days of Heaven though, it's about 2 hours longer, and there's no character that kind of gets you involved in the plot like the young narrator of Days of Heaven. Now plot, it's not really similar at all even though you do have the theme of the bourgeios and the proletariat.

And as far as Snake Eyes goes, watch it again, there's more to it than just being a simple thriller.

I saw Heaven's Gate 10 years ago and loved it. I had heard how bad it was and was excited to see for myself. I think people assumed that since it bombed, that it wasn't any good. Not the case here. If you like Deer Hunter, Assassination of Jesse James or just about any 70s sprawling, slow paced epic, you will like this. Sets and cinematography are to die for. Hopefully this Criterion release will start to gain this great film some new fans.

Mainly Rashomon and the Eclipse set for me. Weekend is also a likely blind buy.

ON THE WATERFRONT would have put it over the top for me but this is still on eof the best batches for me so far. WEEKEND is my favourite Godard and I haven't seen RASHOMON or HEAVEN'S GATE so it'll be great to see them for the first time in HD. Even the Eclipse set looks like fun.

Not a big fan of Pasolini's TRILOGY OF LIFE but it's still a heavyweight release.

Very excited for Heavens Gate. ...I really hope the audio essay thing is very lengthy and at least 2 hours or so. Also the cover is kinda lame. Woulda preferred better cover art for that title/ Also excited for the Pasolini set. Good month.

I will buy all the NOV releases... aside from my neagative remarks on the previous page. Just wish we had more upgrades. NOV is a great month but I was kind of hoping for something that really popped. Don't get me wrong we have waited so long for Heaven's Gate on home video and Weekend.

I guess no ICE STORM for this thanksgiving maybe 2013

Also isn't NOV usually a Criterion 50% sale ? So that makes most of these titles more easy to buy.

Looking back at what I really liked about this month:

- Trilogy of Life - The highlight of the month for me. The films should look beautiful in BD and Criterion really went a step ahead with the extras and the covers. I have not seen a boxart this cool for a long time and the release deserves it. Now, if they can do Teorema ...

- Week End - Loving the cover and I was anticipating this release for months. About time Criterion came back for some Godard. Everyone kept "whining" () about Kurosawa not getting his fix but Godard was in a longer need. The supplements are a bit on the short side but as long as the film looks beautiful I will not complain.

- Eclipse Series 37: When Horror Came to Shochiku - Only heard about a couple of the films in the set before. This one looks like it will offer a different "flavor" so I am in for it. The Eclipse Series are the easiest blind-buys for me. Most of the stuff on them is better than the mainline so I will go for it this time too.

- Rashomon - Not as excited as most people here but that probably is because I have not seen it. The cover is beautiful and the extas are great. I will rent it on DVD first, just to see what the fuzz is all about, and because it isn't a priority so it might take some time to get.

Right, but isn't Twilight Time releasing Sony's Lost Horizon (the musical version), which was on a Sony MOD, so maybe there's hope

In for the Trilogy of Life and Rashomon but if both have to wait a while that would be okay.

To people who like Heaven's Gate and don't like the cover: so far the cover is the only thing even close to drawing me in. Well, that and Kris Krostofferson's weathered sensuality. But mostly the cover.

Count me in for everything but Heaven's Gate, as I wasn't too keen on that film. I probably won't get the Passolini set right away, but I'll preorder Week End and Rashomon, even if there is a B&N sale. I'm planning on using the B&N sale to focus more on Eclipse sets anyways, as I'm just about caught up on BDs, only 13 now, since the preorders for the November titles aren't up yet, and I should get some of those knocked off with my birthday and New England trips coming up.

Thanks. I did like Days of Heaven and the film seems interesting so I'll probably give it a whirl. As far as Snake Eyes I just don't find it as one of De Palma's better works.

I swear I will never understand why anyone wouldn't want to experience a possibly great film the first time in the best possible way. Meaning HD over SD, lossless over lossy. I know a bunch of people have argued why they do it and that fine. I just can't get a handle on it. IMO you will never have that first experience again.

A Kurosawa! A Godard! And what looks like a cool boxset (Haven't seen The Trilogy of Life). I'm in for all three.

Two Weekend movies from Criterion in a row...that's sort of funny. It would be even funnier if someone asked for a birthday present of Godard's Weekend and ended up getting the one with the gay sex.

I wonder if Criterion read this guy's article

http://cinematicdamnation.blogspot.c...ospective.html

"A Shochiku sci-fi/horror film boxed set from Criterion in the spirit of their Bergman and Teshigahara box sets would be the coolest ****ing thing ever! Criterion, please, I'd not only buy something like that, I'd pre-order it four months ahead of time!"-2008

As a rule I agree but Criterions can be hard to rent on BD and if you live outside the US (which I think is the case here) blind buying isn't exactly cheap.

But yeah, I do get what you're saying. Or at least that's what I tell myself that while blind buying.

Because I don't live in the US and as a student my resources aren't exactly the biggest so I can't keep up with Criterion. I still have many more films to get and while Rashomon seems like a great pick it isn't at the top of the wishlist . My only option then is renting or buying a cheap DVD. I love quality and if I get the opportunity of catching it on HD I will surely take it over SD, but my options are limited and the film is what matters the most to me. Most of my favorite stuff is on poor DVD releases because no one bothers to release them on BD .
