If that bothers you, be very happy you did not receive the Bottle Rocket Replacement Case with the criterion logo spine height issue

I saw that. I rented the Criterion Blu-ray and I thought the movie was OK, nothing special so I won't be getting that one anyway

Actually, my first Criterion blind buy will be Paris, Texas, if only because I liked "Wings of Desire" and everybody raves about it. Hopefully this doesn't start a new trend.

I'm curious, to those that buy a lot of Criterion titles, what do your spouses/significant others think of your purchases? My wife so far hasn't said anything, I don't think she cares...yet. The only two Criterion Blu-rays that she's watched with me were Benjamin Button and Bottle Rocket.

Finally got my BD copy of The Third Man (from a board bro)!! Is that bragging? Not my intention just happy I tracked one down to own. It's like I can breathe a little easier now with it on my shelf.

well....

It's a mixed bag.... My wife didn't care for Bottle Rocket whatsoever..... there are other titles she hasn't seen (or doesn't care to) and then ones like "Benny Buttons" or "The Last Metro" she's enjoyed...... and when "Monsoon Wedding" showed up in our mailbox, you would think it was her birthday! (wait.... when IS her birthday again )

So yeah.... I've explained to her, that I intend on keeping up with the Blu-ray releases since I fell behind on the DVDs, and I'm not "over-buying" on other Blu-rays, so it's really a "non-issue" with her..... well.... she still would prefer I didn't, but she knows I'm scratching an itch, and it's something that is an interest to me.

Funny (or not), my first two Criterion BDs were B. Button and Bottle Rocket which my girlfriend was very happy about. I will have to sit her down and show her The Third Man. Criterion BD = My only addiction.

nothing wrong w/Dark City or Shaun of the Dead movie wise... though DC is bad PQ.

now... since this is the thread to do it, let's all discuss WHY we got the Criterions we did (while we're on it):
-The 400 Blows (beginning of the French New Wave) but also i was a huge troublemaker as a kid and did skip school and completely identify w/the main character =). so this has a special place in my heart >P. i think it was my 1st and easiest buy. i was already happy it was coming to BD but on Criterion... just wow! the only previous Criterion i owned was 7 Samurai (yeah i never collected DVDs). i know of their reputation and have rented it many times... just never owned as many til now.
-Bottle Rocket. huge wes anderson fan... i'm quircky and i luv the OCD to 'the plan'. notice 'the planning' is a motif in all anderson movies. he's obsessed about that stuff. MY OCD his OCD =).
-Last Emperor. erh... actually i had a coworker who liked this movie. while i have seen it a LONG time ago, i dont remember much from it. PQ-wise not that good, but could be better. it'll be double dipped for sure... just a matter of timing. actually i dunno why i have it... except it's 2.4 and epic =).
-7th Seal. luv the imagery of death. precursor of No Country for Old Men.
-Yojimbo/Sanjuro (i have all 31 Kurosawa movies on DVD), i intend to replicate it for Blu-Ray
-Kagemusha (see above).
-Chungking Express (my friend said this is 1 of the best WKM... but i dunno. i'm only 1/2 way through it)
-Last Metro (cause of 400 Blows, Truffaut) haven't seen it yet. blind buy.
-Last Year Maribend (blind buy).
-Howards End (rented, watched a few minutes here and there enough to blind buy it).
-Benjamin (well technically another studio right? huge fincher fan, has all of his BD)
-Monsoon Wedding (luv the colors, cultural insights, PQ, etc.) erm... still a blind buy, haven't finished the movie yet hahaha!

planned:
-yojimbo/sanjuro obviously
-days of heaven (another blind buy) i've seen enough of it that it's beautiful nuff to have just like my new world. i see it more like planet earth... than actual movies

My wife pretty much only likes romantic dramas or romantic comedies. She enjoyed "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" and was indifferent towards Bottle Rocket. I've seen the rest of the Criterion Blu-rays by myself, mostly while she's asleep or out since I feel weird watching movies by myself while she's doing stuff around the house. She came home one time while I was watching "In The Realm of the Senses" and she thought I was watching porn .

As long as you didn't have a box of kleenex sitting on the table next to you, you should have been fine.

Ha! Still awkward I'm sure. At least it was your wife. And not your next door neighbors...while you put the movie on pause...did I mention the neighbors don't own a TV?

My wife doesn't care one way or the other but I'm proud to say (and Beta and I talked about this last summer) that she watched from beginning to end ITROTS and actually enjoyed it.

But for the most part I buy what I want and never consult her for small purchases. If our weekly or monthly budget is low we may discuss what we both want to cut out and/or add but for the most part she doesn't care nor do I.

Plus, its my hobby/love hopefully someday future profession and she knew this when we first met.

No wife (or girlfriend for that matter), but my mom complains every time I buy a new BD.

I'm still young and live at home, and she wants me to save money while I'm in school, but instead I spend it on every Criterion BD that comes out.

Oh well!

Just have to ask it of those who like to have a complete Criterion collection. How far would you take it? What if a major league stinkbomb like Angels & Demons or Gigli came out on Criterion? Would you actually buy it just to complete your collection?

LOL! I'm 29 and live alone and when my mom comes by to visit she basically says the same thing when she looks at my video game/Blu-Ray collection. I have a very good job but she tells me I need to cut back and save incase I get laid off.

My OCD of not having a complete set would make me purchase any movie Criterion will release on blu ray.

Since I made the decision of starting to collect Master of Cinema blu rays, I decided I'm going to purchase For All Mankind and M even though they won't play on my player, and I'll own them from Criterion, just to have the full set.

I just turned 22, have $3,000 credit card debt, and work a part time, minimum wage job.
My monetary priorities are a little...off.

Yikes, that really is pushing it. Though that was about the situation I was in during my college days. Money ain't everything. Some of the best days of my life were when I was flat broke.

Whoo Whoo! Ordered "Paris, Texas", "8 1/2" and "The General" for $57 via Barnes & Noble buy 2, get the third free (inc. membership and 15% coupon).

I want that Rosselini War Trilogy but if the B&N 50% off sale is definitely coming in March, I can wait another month.

The next sale will be huge for me:

All BDs from Gomorrah on (except Revanche direct from Criterion) AND

Rosselini War Trilogy
Berlin Alexanderplatz
Naked (LOVED this film but never purchased it)
Taste of Cherry (I have never seen an Abbas Kiarostami film, but La Binoche is in his new film, so I have to prepare )
The Ruling Class (big Alastair Sim fan, but never saw this)
Hobson's Choice (big Charles Laughton fan, but never saw this)
That Hamilton Woman

Also, can anyone convince me to buy Eric Rohmer: Six Moral Tales? That would be a total blind buy, but at 50% off it would be worth it.

EDIT: Never mind, totally worth it.

EDIT #2: The total for all this right now on Amazon is $579.84!

I would say that if you like "Hobson's Choice" and any of David Lean's other early British films that Criterion has released, including "Great Expectation," "Oliver Twist," and "Brief Encounter," then you'd be missing out not to pick up the great David Lean Centenary Collection from Amazon UK, McCrutchy. It's well worth the investment!

Oddly no Barnes & Noble in the Twin Cities MN area got any BDs in for Paris Texas! at all? They got the DVD version but no store got the BD. Wo orders for these stores? They are hit and miss sometimes.
