Why does everyone think it's just 1 film? Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors is a much better film to begin with and I see all 4 of the Kino films being released if such a thing happened.

I've been trying to catch up on some Criterion films and I'm relatively new to these types of classics. The only Criterions I own thus far are 12 Angry Men, Seven Samurai, and The Seventh Seal. I know this can be quite a personal and loaded choice, but what are some top 5's out there that are must own? I've heard Night of the Hunter is a fantastic blu. Thanks in advance.

I wonder if they'll do an Eclipse box set for Paradjanov.

No offense to this post, but Eclipse would be useless.

I did a quick view of your collection, so here are 5 I think you will like (all BDs). Not necessarily my personal top five, but all films I recommend highly in the Criterion Collection.

Paths of Glory
The Killing
Wages of Fear
Anatomy of a Murder
Le Cercle Rouge

Here are some more good ones (again, all BDs), based a lot on your collection, that I think you can't go wrong with (yeah, there are so many good ones which is why we love the Criterion Collection):

[Show spoiler]Still Walking - a personal top 5, a subdued yet completely engrossing contemporary Japanese family drama that really draws you in. I did not expect much from it when I sat down to watch it and it turned out to be one of my favorites. This is the film that launched me into exploring more Japanese cinema.
Paris, Texas
Night of the Hunter
Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence - you have some war movies and documentaries in your collection, and this is a powerful but unorthodox WWII film about prisoners held by the Japanese. Also, it is by the great Japanese director Nagisa Oshima, whose work I like very much.
The Thin Red Line - not a personal favorite, and way too philosophical for my taste to be an effective WWII film, but it has some great action scenes and the PQ is stellar. You might like it a lot, many do.
Charade
High and Low
Leon Morin, Priest - if you like The Seventh Seal, this is a fine little drama set in WWII Vichy France about faith and sacrifice, very well done.
Solaris - think of this as the Soviet "2001: A Space Odyssey", really creeps up on you. Haunting, with beautiful cinematography
Dazed and Confused
Letter Never Sent
World on a Wire
The Music Room
The Secret of the Grain
Yojimbo/Sanjuro
People on Sunday
Battle of Algiers
Three Colors Trilogy
Carlos
The Four Feathers
Sweet Smell of Success
Stagecoach
Pale Flower

Ride with the Devil - Ang Lee's masterful Civil War film about Confederate guerillas in the borderlands of Missouri-Kansas
Sweetie - odd but engrossing Australian film about the effects on a family of a mentally ill daughter. If you like David Lynch (not sure if you do), this will appeal to you, as it has a Lynchian vibe to it.
For All Mankind - poetic and thrilling look at the Apollo Space Program, narrated by many of the astronauts themselves
Revanche
Harakiri
A Night to Remember
Kes
Au Revoir les Enfants
The Leopard
Mystery Train
Wings of Desire

I haven't watched the David Lean Box set yet, or many of my latest B&N sale pickups like The 39 Steps, The Samurai Trilogy, or Down by Law, but many here like these also.

my personal pipe dream is that Criterion would get the rights to some Peter Greenaway films.

and even though I have the three Trilogy of Life Pasolini films already on blu - I'm definitely double dipping for the Criterion edition.

I'm relieved.

The only Criterion titles that I'm interested in for Oct. and Nov. are In the Mood for Love and Rashomon.

blu-ray upgrade or bust.
I've only seen Ashik Kerib from that box set, but the transfer was not great. I'd love to see these on Blu-Ray with some extras.

Also, if someone asks for a list of top 5 Criterions, soon people will have listed their entire collection!

I guess Im looking for upgrades on what I have. Id really like the Blu Ray of Thief of Bagdad. Criterion has some many genres they go after, I could wait forever. And I dont mind waiting because this year Im getting the Hitchcock set, Indiana Jones, Universal Horror Set, etc
I have lots of Criterion. I am curious what Frank Capra & Howard Hawks films they have gotten a hold of.

Hideous treatment of one of Russell's better films.

Those are the fastest pre-orders have shown up in a while...

It's a minor question, but shouldn't Weekend be listed as Week End? I thought that's what the title was.

Ordered the Royal Tenebaums while it's still on sale. It's the only Wes Anderson film I've never seen but I liked all the others he's made.

Just finished watching Bergman's Persona. I need to sort out all my feelings for the film before I can come to a conclusion. it left me fascinated, confused, and disturbed. It was such a beautiful film but so unsettling. Bergman is slowly becoming a favorite of mine. Persona was really emotionally intense for me, is there anymore of his work that is even more intense?

I found Autumn Sonata, The Virgin Spring, Scenes from a Marriage, From the Life of the Marionettes, Cries and Whispers, and the movies of the Faith Trilogy (The Silence, Through a Glass Darkly, and Winter Light) all just as intense. Bergman's not a laid back guy. But his movies cast a spell like no one else's.
