I was proabably the only one who liked Tropical Splash 7-Up and Coke Blaq, the Coffee flavoured, caffeine boosted coke. Both of those are also long OOP in Canada. I'm also sad that Loblaws no longer chooses to sell Jamaican style Ginger Beer in the 2L bottles. That stuff used to burn your mouth and went fantastically well with Peach vodka and lime.

This. I like some of the redundant releases, but it's all personal taste. Others I think people just want everything to be Criterion.

I was on another forum recently (I can't actually remember which) when I saw a comment that was along the lines of "Criterion really needs to release more mainstream titles". I was slightly taken aback as, from my viewpoint, Criterion are releasing more mainstream titles than ever before - maybe not Transformers mainstream but certainly mainstream within the cinephile community.

When the more/less deserving debate comes up I'm not entirely sure what side to take. I don't particularly know why people beg for something like 'The Game' to get the 'Criterion treatment' when it's a title that could easily be put out from the studio. But, it's been released and I must admit that it would probably have received substantially less extras had Criterion not taken it on board.

A part of me feels, couldn't they have put the time and effort into releasing Hou Hsiao-Hsien, Glauber Rocha, Fei Mu, Yoshishige Yoshida or any other director who's works are hard to find? But, it's hard to deny that The Game et al will sell by the bucketload, making the obscure titles that I'd like to see Criterion release, easier to finance.

I have said this before and suspect I will continue to do so, a lot of people want "favorites" to be release by Criterion for the "cool factor", my favorite movie as a Criterion lable, aren't I cool I understand why Criterion will try to get more mainstream movies, these will sell a lot more and generate revenue for them, they are a business afterall. I am surprise that we have not heard more about having the Nolan Batman trilogy on Criterion

I get the same feeling every time I read this thread. Some people here act way too snobby and arrogant over criterion films. FGS, it's just a label. Who cares if someone wants Batman on CC. Many people go for the criterion release over other releases of the same film because they put out such quality releases.

Do I get a free Coke because Criterion have actually released my favourite movie without me whining and wanting it on an Internet message board? Cause they have released and included 6 more films as bonus features. it's a bit mainstream too, because it has one of the first boy bands ever in it and people still go on about how fake they were despite the contrary evidence. I hope I get a free coke because I'm so cool that my favourite film is out on Criterion Blu-ray.

I'm just joking P@t, it's a Friday and the day before my birthday and I'm just trying to lighten thr thread up some.

I suspect not, people want Criterion for the prestige, make's them feel so "cool". You can spot them easy everytime a "mainstream" movie as a Criterion release and you seem them move in pack with their "so proud comments" about the release when the rest of them time they find the other Criterion release snoby, arthouse, boring releases.

It's quite alright

I am just feeling b!tchy these days and getting a little tired of the stupidity that is going on in the forum, some people seem to just rattle my "cage" a bit more. I suspect I need a break from the forum before I am asked to take a vacation after I tell off someone and their "childish comments"

I've cut back on posting because it's just become so repetitive. People don't discuss the actual films in the collection anymore. It's just complaint after complaint. Oh well. I'm happy with my titles. My Dardennes come today.

The worst sort are those pretentious types who decree a film to not be 'Criterion worthy'. Who decides this?! This is a label that is releasing the wretched Heaven's Gate, so anything should be permitted.

Everyone has a title they pick up to purchase and put down over and over. This is my title. I've planned to purchase it a few times and always seem to pass. Hadn't really heard much about it in this forum.

I've always been partial to Arsenic and Old Lace. That film always cracks me up. It would be nice to see some of his films in HD. He seems to be ignored a lot.

I try from time to time to discuss some of the movies, but usually I'm drowned out by the countless lists of release predictions, Recent B&N hauls, Wanted lists etc. I really hate lists. I know you and Pat post a lot of good info and personal reviews which have many times tipped the scales for me when I'm on the fence about a title. So from that I've learned it really doesn't matter if a review of mine starts any discussion as long as someone reads it and it benefits them.

Not everyone wants their favorite titles to be Criterion simply because of the label. I don't think many people, if any, in this Criterion thread fit that description. Definitely in some of the other more snobby Criterion sites. I would like every title I absolutely love to be a Criterion release just because of the sheer production value of Criterion titles. Luckily Nolan's films don't fit into my 'absolutely love' category.

I like Criterion because they do a tremendous job with their releases. Every month on the 15th I look forward to the announcements to see if there is a film I like that's coming out - this year was a decent year with Godzilla, Anatomy of A Murder and the 39 Steps. The Gold Rush was a blind buy due to so many highly recommends. And Rashomon Im going to rent first because I am curious about this one.
At Amoeba records they still carry laserdiscs and every now & then I see their releases of King Kong and Forbidden Planet. They did such awesome work on LD's *back in the day*

Hey, "Week End" on BD? Giddy-up!
Are those the really hot and spicy ones? I haven't seen them in a while. I usually find them in some remote convenience store, once in a blue moon. Very tasty and REALLY hot!!!

Well let's get the ball rolling then. I watched the Samurai Trilogy and I was impressed. I think I'm going to start the novel this weekend to see how it compares.

I too enjoy some of the more popular releases and have a few wants, but at the same time, I can see where P@t is coming from, since some "fans" only want Hollywood productions and dismiss anything "foreign." and by foreign I don't just mean foreign language films, but anything different that they don't know, including indie films, silent films, or stuff that isn't as well known. People just don't want to leave their comfort zones and try new things.

Fantastic novel. As soon as I finished it, I wanted to reread it, and I don't generally reread books often if at all. There's just an INCREDIBLE amount of material that was left out of the book for the trilogy, which is really not a surprise since it happens often when translating a written work to the screen. The first part of the trilogy is fairly faithful to the novel, but parts two and three leave much out and change a few plot points here and there.

I would imagine, as my copy of the novel is over 1000 pp. A lot of films pale in comparison to their literary counterparts. Look at Gone With the Wind, as epic and long as it was, it's severely cut in comparison to the novel. You know, there's never been a true adaptation of A Study in Scarlet, the first Sherlock Holmes story. The film just took the title and completely changed the plot.

There are a few cases where I prefer the film to the book, but those are rare occasions.
