Oliver Gourmet, aka Roger in La promesse and the waffle boss in Rosetta looks a lot like Brett Butt from Corner Gas.
I'm enjoying La promesse a bit more than Rosetta at the moment. It's not as depressing but still rather bleak. |

Watched Chungking Express yesterday and really enjoyed it. Anyone have some recommendations for similar films (style, setting, time period, etc.) I read Fallen Angels is another great one, so I'll be adding that to my list. Will also likely consider In the Mood for Love too. But I'm open to any other ideas too, even if I don't have time to watch them right now

Glauber Rocha: Not "one more" film exactly (how can you top Age of the Earth anyways), but would have liked to have seen his original vision for the film, a Jack Nicholson starring, North America, Brazil, Europe and Africa location, bigger budget version. Dennis Hopper: Now this is strange how I will answer this. Not a film he made before his death, but a chance to have creative control over 1 more studio film after 1971, had Universal released The Last Movie wider and not pulled it due to them wanting it edited. Dennis never made a Hollywood picture again until the late 80's with Colors, and ever since was just safe, straight forward films. Would have love to seen his career go a different path, and who knows, maybe Hollywood filmmaking would be a drastic change today if The Last Movie was a $ success and Universal kept giving these guys 100% creative control over films. Then again, we prob wouldn't have Out of the Blue and his turn in Mad Dog Morgan. But Hollywood could have been filled with more Two-Lane Blacktops, Hired Hands, and The Last Movies. I can throw in Fassbinder, knowing he had 3 films he wanted to make before he sadly passed away. Last edited by SpiderBaby; 08-20-2012 at 10:53 PM. |

Kino's Happy Together blu-ray is very good and easily the best I've seen the film look. Kino's Fallen Angels blu-ray is also meant to be very good, but I haven't upgraded that yet; my DVD is still pretty good. If you like Chungking Express, you should definitely be looking at Fallen Angels, because they were all filmed at the same time. Wong Kar-Wai took a break from Ashes Of Time (which I love) and filmed a series of short-ish films. There was enough for a whole film in Fallen Angels, but Chungking Express is really a 30 minute film and a 60 minute film that are loosely connected. I recently bought and watched for the first time Days Of Being Wild, which was also lovely, but the Asian blu-ray has dreadful subtitles. I would double-dip if Artificial Eye or Kino picked up that title. I've been waiting for this In The Mood For Love upgrade. It's one of my favourite films. |

Bought/watched Black Moon a few weeks ago. Tonight I decided to check out the supplements on the disc and sat down ready for at least a half hour to an hour of interesting material per usual, only to realize there's just a 12 min interview w Malle and a bunch of photos from filming. Anyone care to enlighten me on why this was a "full price" release? I feel kind of ripped off because I paid nearly $40 for it & I can't help thinking that if anyone but CC released it I wouldn't of had to. The transfer looked much brighter than I remember seeing it years ago (which actually isn't much of an improvement in my opinion) but other than the HD upgrade there is nothing else to this release. Did the work put into the HD transfer simply cost more due to the low interest in this film? or what? To be clear, I'm not talking about the merits or quality of the film, just the CC blu ray release in terms of extras and full price when usually there's a discounted price for films that contain little or no supplements.
