Maybe, maybe not. Generally the pictures on Facebook/Twitter mean nothing regarding potential Blu-ray release.

In the Jean Grémillon set, I've watched Remorque and Lumière d’été and loved them both. Might re-watch Lumière d’été again because I was pretty tired when I watched that. It is reminiscent of La règle du jeu.
I definitely want more Jean Gabin, so I'll be getting La Grande Illusion and Le Quai Des Brumes from the UK soon.
If there's a sale in November I'll be getting the Sacha Guitry eclipse set.
I had forgotten that there were two soundtracks for each film...might just pull them out this weekend. Thanks for the reminder Doc!

I really enjoyed the Grémillon set as well. I think Remorques was my favorite of the three...but I think LE CIEL EST À VOUS was the best film in the set.

La Grande Illusion was GREAT (and I opted for the UK version as well). I'm really becoming a big fan of Gabin's films, hence my love of Remorques.

I just watched Rosetta for the first time, and it floored me. Such a great movie, and such a great performance from Émilie Dequenne. This might be my Criterion release of the year.

I see Sunrise is listed as region free. Any other big titles that aren't locked?
This site is pretty good nowadays about the region listings, so it it worth double checking whatever interests you.

Off the top of my head, Sunrise and City Girl are both region free, as well as Silence de la Mer. Also, BFI's Great White Silence is region free and in my opinion a must have for any collection not allergic to silents.

The UK seems to love their dual discs, so most things now come will a DVD which will be PAL. None of MoC's Universal releases are unlocked, per the condition of getting the license.

I'm planning on going region free and want a player for both A and everything else. What can everyone recommend? Are the Insignia good?

I know this isn't the right place to make this request, however...

I have a sealed copy of La Havre I am looking to trade for Rosetta, does this interest anybody?

I see you found the Insignia thread but I'll give you some quick feedback here...

I love the BRDVD4 as a dedicated Region B player but I don't think I'd want it as a primary.

Pros: they're cheap (Best Buy currently has a refurb for $39.99 on their website); region changing involves a few simple remote commands; they work

Cons: can't update firmware without losing region-free; might need to 'downgrade' firmware initially (easy to do but still...); noisy (though pretty quiet while playing); very basic interface - I don't use streaming/networking but it seems pretty limited; they get kinda hot

While they may be more than some people are interested in spending, Oppos are easily modded and are justly beloved. Firmware updates aren't a problem, so they rarely have issues playing anything.

Just another option. I would buy mine again in a heartbeat.

The Great White Silence might be one of the best documentaries I have ever seen. I can't wait to see the Everest doc that BFI is trying to acquire/are working on right now.

Another shout for The Great White Silence here. Probably the best package BFI have put out, an amazing unearthed gem.

Late last night I watched Cries and Whispers streamed through xbox hulu, and by the end of it I couldn't get to sleep. It left this weird, depressed, haunted feeling so much that I probably will be thinking about it one way or another for awhile. There was symbolisms that I feel I probably missed but it was pretty late in the evening. I won't be able to watch it again for some time. What's funny, is I watched this about an hour after I got home from the Singin in the Rain Anniversary theater showing,,, so as one would expect, I felt a wide variety of emotions this night...
Few scenes that were standouts:
[Show spoiler]Obviously, the whole "Tissue of lies" scene was intense and really came out of nowhere for me. I felt that this was awesome b/c we did not really yet know Karin yet, and this really 'introduced' us to who she is and how she feels.

[Show spoiler]Also, the death scene was uncomfortable. During Anna's dream/flashback, when Agnes calls in the sisters individually was insane. I felt like the whole scene was so surreal.

I'm glad I finally got around to watching it, and even though it had a huge resonating factor on me, I can't see my self watching this again anytime soon. It really rips through the soul.. Need to watch more Bergman, so far I've seen Persona, Wild Strawberries, and own The Seventh Seal. I'm thinking maybe Scenes from a Marriage next, but trying to decide between TV series edition or just the film.

You should also pick up the virgin spring. It's a beautiful movie!

Looking at Hulu, I really wish they'd soon release titles like Mon Oncle d'Amérique, The Red Balloon, Valerie and Her Week of Wonders, Daisies, Cure, (I obviously love surreal shit Anybody got recommendations?) and of course, the highly regarded classics such as Tokyo Story and City Lights.

Ugetsu, Woman in the Dunes, The Kid, and Picnic at Hanging Rock would be cool too.

I'd also love to own Life Aquatic and Le Samouraï, but it doesn't look like were getting those two anytime soon.

Does it have to be released by Criterion?

Have you seen Touchez pas au grisbi?
My favourite Gabin film and one of my favourite films. Incredibly cool film about an ageing gangster.
My Criterion DVD looks fine, but I'd probably upgrade it if I could

Thanks for the suggestions. I ordered those titles plus the Bill Douglas trilogy. Eventually I'm going to have to go region free though; there are so many great movies that are region locked!

Back to Criterion related discussion, here's hoping December brings a release of Tokyo Story. I'd also love an upgrade of Ugetsu Monogatari. Highly recommended.
