I've been on a real silent film bender recently: Sunrise, City Girl, Gold Rush, the Josef von Sternberg silents, silent Ozu's, etc.
Plus, Metropolis is waiting for when I'm not tired and have 2.5 hours up my sleeve.
I think Lonesome and Phantom Carriage might be on my list for the next B&N sale...
If you love Sunrise and City Girl, you'll love Lonesome.

Coeur Fidele, even with its amazing Blu-ray restoration, is just okay. This is a totally different kind of film from Sunrise, Lonesome, or City Girl. It's more of an art-house film from that time period, while the others are just regular enterainers from that time period.

Does People on Sunday have a story or is it more like a documentary?

Seems like they may shovel out the Qatsi Trilogy in December. They didn't wait long after the Heaven's Gate clue to announce it.

Kudos to Coeur Fidele as well...a great silent film. Epstein is another director more people should know about.

It has a story. It has a rough, unscripted feel to it (though that's deceptive - it's technically very sound and very well made) and the story isn't all that involved but it's very, very engaging. On the surface it's a pretty light 'slice of life' kind of thing but it's more than that and it has some surprisingly powerful moments (though maybe that shouldn't be surprising since Billy Wilder wrote the screenplay).

It's well worth checking out.

Not difficult at all, unless you're a pansy who can't stomach somewhat graphic material in a fictional film setting.

Plus, that material isn't spread out too much, so it's not a whole couple hours of constant hard-to-watch material.

Just watched it yesterday. Wonderful film. As always amazing black & white cinematography from Gunnar Fischer. What a master!
Harriet Andersson does a marvelous acting job and is very pretty to look at no doubt. The famous scene that Godard always references, when Andersson looks directly at the camera and Bergman holds the shot for what seems like a lifetime as the background fades to black, is a sight to behold. I will definitely be revisiting this title soon. To bad Criterion couldn't get the rights to the exploitation film version of this as a extra. I bet it was hilarious when it jumped from Bergmans masterpiece to the inserted scenes shot to 'spice' the film up.

I'm hoping on a second viewing the film will become more appealing to me, but yeah I was pretty disappointed with it. Maybe my expectations were too high.

That's a pretty high recommendation there. The movie wasn't even on my radar before.

...I think this film wasn't on any one's radars because it was pretty much a lost film until Criterion released it. The restoration is amazing! Over time, Lonesome will be added to those Best Film lists because now critics can finally watch the Criterion video.

I loved People on Sunday. What I really liked about it is that even though there is a story there it felt like just a documented day in the life. It just felt so real. The fact that they used non professional actors helps that as well. I would recommend this title as well. I'm very interested in Lonesome now. I might pick it up on Friday with Quadrophenia.

Firs movie from the set Travels With Hiroshi Shimizu

Minato No Nihon Musume 1933 (Japanese Girls At The Harbor)

I knew very little about Shimizu before starting this movie. The movie is a silent one and you have two choices, watch it with a score or without. If you can handle it I would recommend you see it without the score. I usually prefer watching many of these silent movies with music playing in the background but the score for this one quickly become's repetitive to the point of being boring. The story itself is a drama, a sort of love triangle spread over a long period starting from school days. The cinematography is however extraordinary and I was also surprise by the quality of the video since we are not talking about a movie made by Kurosawa, Ozu or Misogushi. The video quality is shocking. While the story was not one to interest me, the movie is worth seeing for the camera work and that give's us a look of a Japan from the past.

Got my copy of Le Havre today. Well, it actually came Monday, but I came home early. Quadrophenia should show up on Friday just in time for the long weekend. I need something witty and intelligent as I made the massive mistake of subjecting myself to rereading Twilight, while sober, so I could actually finish the damn book. It only took me 4 years and it was much, much, much worse this time. My Sony almost didn't survive the ordeal, as I came very close to tossing it across the room.

Or have a very low Artistic Jerk tolerance.

(I can barely make it through a Charlie Kaufman movie, and can't go within a 100 yds. of Wes Anderson, so Von Trier is way beyond my physical capacity for viewing... )

That is because you have the wrong name. Andy Kaufman is where the entertainment is(was) at.

Or Phillip Kauffman:
Invasion of the Body Snatchers '78
The Right Stuff

(unseen by me but on my queue):
Unbearable Lightness of Being (I'd blind buy if CC released it)
The Great Northfield Minnesota Raid

By the way, Charlie kauffman's Great (being John Malkvovich, Adaptation, eternal Sunshine & to a bit of a lesser extent Synecdoche NY) & Man on the Moon I remember liking very much.

Nope. Last Friday (I believe it was Friday. If not, sometime this past weekend) going on C's site though, they had a banner saying they were working on the site, so place orders by whatever time it said. Maybe they were doing something for an upcoming sale so the site don't crash . Just trying to give you some hope.
