Why "for a 1940s film" it's good? I'll bet that more 1940s films had better, wittier scripts than 75% of today's movies, and that's being generous.

Borders.com... "Third Man blu-ray"... check store inventory...

(I know nobody ever pays any attention, but... in my area, 1/2 of the dozen in store statuses are "likely in store"; likely price is 39.99. If/when Borders has another coupon, less. Knock yourselves out. Or just ignore this post too.)

You know, I'm not so sure about this. Even if another studio releases a Blu-ray version, Criterion's will still be out of print. I'm sure there will be a lot of people out there who will join the Blu-ray camp and will try to complete their Criterion's Blu-ray collection. A release of the movie by another studio won't do.

Well, let's hope they don't give it the RAN treatment (another title Criterion lost the rights to Studio Canal to). From the reviews that I've read for the UK release, the PQ is pretty disappointing by Blu-ray standards, only slightly better than Criterion's DVD release of the movie.

Are you completely oblivious of their transfer of Ran? Criterion quality it certainly is not!!

Agreed. Except I'd say that current movie's aren't even on the same level as a film such as The Third Man.

I just finished watching 'Sweet Movie'..... I felt that it was probably one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Is there anyone who has seen it and wants to explain its merits to me?????

I picked up The Third Man used on ebay for $30 (I had $35 ebay bucks to use and found a slipcover also...slipcover will be here this week and is in better condition than one I have). I have bought all of my Criterion blu-rays the past 2 weeks other than Benjamin Button. I have Seventh Seal and Realm of the Senses coming in a few days. Kind've addicting buying Criterion blu-rays.

Question about Borders. I've never bought from them before. Right now they have Third Man Blu-Ray for sale on their website but says backordered a few weeks. Does this mean I would be guaranteed to get a copy or do they just put you on a list that you man never get to buy on?

Hey all! just got this email from Criterion regarding my cases. So they should be here soon!
I ordered my cases on December 18 by the way.

Thank you for your recent case purchase! Your Blu-ray replacement cases have been sent out via USPS First Class/ Priority mail so you should expect to receive them within two weeks. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns, and thanks for supporting Criterion!

Best,

Karen

That is the one exception.
Every other one is great. (or so i've read in the reviews/studiocanal threads)
They decided to take the cheap route with Ran.

Don't let one bad apple spoil the bunch.

Good evening,

I would like to point out a couple of things:

1. Criterion never owned the rights to Ran. They licensed them, just like in the past they licensed from the French distribs the rights for such films as Quai Des Orfevres, Le trou, etc. With other words, there is a very big difference between owning and licensing.

2. Belle de jour, which is part of the Studio Canal Collection, is very unlikely to be released in the U.S. through LionsGate -- due to the fact that the rights for the film are controlled by Miramax. This isn't/wasn't the case in the UK, where Studio Canal were able to release the film on Blu-ray through their offshoot, Optimum Home Entertainment (in case it is not clear, the French distribs took over Optimum Home Entertainment a few years ago).

3. There certainly is room for improvement on some of the Studio Canal Collection discs, and specifically Ran, but the rest of the titles, including The Deer Hunter, are definitely solid upgrades over previous SDVD releases.

4. Finally, I get the feeling that a lot of people that post in this thread do not actually know who Studio Canal are, or have a basic idea what amount of content they own. So, let's make it clear - Studio Canal, together with their subdivisions, are actually bigger than a lot of the so-called majors in the U.S. Until a few years ago, Studio Canal had the third largest film library in the world. And they have kept growing.

Hehe....Dusan Makavejev is an interesting director. It's a complex and visceral film which as you probably learned, Makavejev made sure it was graphic sexually in the most shocking way. Well, perhaps not shocking if you are a person who digs "scat".

But I suppose for those who enjoy daring films like "Salo", "Sweet Movie" is child's play.

Hey guys, for those who went buy B&N yesterday for "Paris, Texas" and didn't see them. I got an e-mail from B&N saying that my order has been delayed for "Paris, Texas":

We apologize, but due to an unexpected delay, we are unable to ship the item(s) listed below in the time frame we stated in our previous email. We anticipate that your item(s) will be shipped within the next 1-5 business days.

That's good to hear, kndy. Luckily, B&N shipped my copy yesterday. I must've gotten the only copy.

Seriously, though, I received a similar e-mail from B&N for "8 1/2," but the disc still shipped and arrived the same week of release.

Every time I have ordered from B&N, I get the same email, but my orders usually ships the very next day.

I pre-ordered "Paris, Texas" from Amazon and it shipped on Monday, Jan 25, so I don't think there's a shortage or something like that.

Just trying to make you feel better, I guess.

Don't worry I've had that email before and still received on time. Luckily my order for Paris, Texas, 8 1/2, and Howard's End shipped yesterday.

its all depends on what your use to. keep in mind i am a young'n compared to alot of members here. so only getting into movies around 1995 i have come to expect and like certain things about modern cinema, and i find these things missing in the olden times movies. however after just watching my first hitchcock film and criterion's such as third man, repulsion, playtime etc i have come to appreciate older movies more and am slowly getting into them. not saying one is better than the other. it all depends what your use to and have a preference for.

KNDY,

Can you tell me when/if you get your deepdiscount order? I am starting to get a little mad at mine. They told me to wait 15 business days after it shipped to contact them about a refund/re-ship, so I have to wait a couple more days to do that. I am just wondering if anyone got an order from them yet and you were the only other person on here I knew ordered from them.
