Speaking of Lars von Trier...

Shia LaBeouf sent sex tapes to win part in Lars von Trier's Nymphomaniac

Anyway, I'm curious how Breaking the Waves would look in 1080P...

Cute use of words, there.

And while I'm thinking about it, this review of the UK Blu disc seems to have the same visual structure as the DVDBeaver caps of Criterion's release. I'm not sure what the purpose is in the continual soft focus, lack of grain structure or seeming lack of deep blacks, but Pathe seemed to have done this on purpose, and Criterion followed suit. Will have to see the disc in motion before making a truly educated opinion though.

When is going to be the review for Children of Paradise up ? After reading the DVDBeaver review I am throughly disappointed and so have a last hope for it not to be a total wreck. Also, what happened to the review of Lonesome, will it come out? Not trying to pressure things , just wondering.

The third movie from the set Travels With Hiroshi Shimizu

Anma to onna 1938 (The Masseurs and a Woman)

This movie is very short at 66 minutes. It's the story of two blind masseurs, Toku and Fuku. Both a travelling from village to village offering her skills. The story mostly revolve around Toku and a woman from Tokyo that he at first mistaken as a thief. The woman is on the run but not for the reasons that Toku believe. The ending is a sad one. As I mention, the movie is short but it does a good job of presenting the characters. Video quality wise this was the best one in the set so far.

I feel sorry for the movies from early last century that have to stand up to the scrutiny and standards of todays Highdef technology .
Soon nobody will remember how 35mm projections looked liked, the perversive charm of scratches and flicker. It would be like photoshoping 19 century photos to make them look sleek for todays standards. Thank god that nobody is complaining for the lack of color .

Because of how waxy all of the screen captures look. They also mention how Criterion went with a "waxy" look for it which is puzzling seeing how their DVD was perfectly "grainy". Probably the fault of Pathe here meaning that the waxy look comes from the restoration itself and not from Criterion but still disappointing. The DVD has less detail but looks a lot better. I wouldn't have mind if they took another year to release it if it meant we would have gotten it in the best possible way. I still reserve my final judgement until I see it in motion. I will get the BD but they dropped the ball on this one. Probably my most anticipated release of the year gone wrong.

Another puzzling thing is how different the final result looks from what they originally showed as footage of the new restoration. The video looked amazing but the final release looks waxy with some blacks "turning into grey" (For lack of a better term) when they aren't supposed to. I don't know, maybe I am being too harsh on it but I still need to wrap my mind around the fact that Criterion green-lighted this release of a major title without thinking it twice.

I think it is a little early to make up one's mind on this release. DvdBeaver's caps are notoriously iffy and no one should start forming strong opinions based on a dubious second hand source or review.

At this point, there is no single source or reviewer who is completely reliable. It is all about consensus from disparate sources until you have it in your hands and then see for yourself.

Does anyone know if there is any likelihood of It's a Wonderful Life hitting BD under the Criterion label?

Probably zero since it is a big seller for Paramount. They can just rerelease it every Christmas.

I'd really like to see Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore get a Criterion release. Along with King of Comedy. And perhaps After Hours. That would be a nice Scorsese lineup there!

Yes! +1

Also, The Golden Heart Trilogy: Breaking the Waves/The Idiots/Dancer in The Dark.

The footage matches with what's shown in this video, tone wise. There are no deep, over-saturated blacks here. It always had a "softer" look, despite the over-sharpening of previous DVD copies.

That's the restration. That's how it looks. Criterion didn't "drop the ball" on anything. They didn't "make it waxy", just because that's what one website claims... you're just used to seeing an improperly contrasted version all these years. Just like Three Colors (and Criterion's mishap in the mis-framing of Blue), they are using the master given to them by Pathe, who did the restoration.
