They should get Schuyler Fisk to contribute, too.

That's odd..I don't think it went out of stock at any point. I ordered it along with two other titles and they arrived on Saturday.

....watched it on Sunday for the first time and loved it.

Hmm, but RB would come out DURING the sale in that case? I'm assuming it wouldn't have the 50% off price until after it had been released, or would the pre-order be cheaper as well?

Default You know something....

Some folks here at some point have registered their disgust on certain films that individuals suggest Criterion should release so I'll jump on that bandwagon and suggest they should give King vs. Godzilla a Criterion treatment. A poster here had a link in their signature in which you could suggest a title to Criterion.

It's the most commercially successful Godzilla film to date and the one that sold the most tickets in Japan. The original 1954 film maybe credited as the most "mature" and "sophisticated" of all 28 films but it really doesn't compare to Toho's "Golden Age" of Japanese Science Fiction films (I'm also one who prefers 1961's Mothra to Godzilla. I believe that is the best Japanese monster movie ever made). King Kong vs. Godzilla also suffers from a atrocious history of lackluster releases on Home Video. From the VHS to Laserdisc to even DVD. It seems the studio does not give a rat's ass about one of its most important films nor has put any major effort to restore it. It also continues to be the only Godzilla film which the original Japanese cut has not been seen. Akira Ifukube's score has been replaced with stock music from various Universal Studio films and some of the cuts and additional footage that makes no sense. People out there are really missing on something special. It's truly a gem.

Unfortunately, all of this is just pipe dream due to the issues between Toho and Universal that make a release unlikely, let alone one as pristine as Criterion on Blu Ray. There's also the fact that there was a fire at Universal that I believe destroyed either prints or negatives (I'm not sure which) of some of their films, which included the American version of King Kong vs. Godzilla, sadly.

Quick question...

When's the best time to buy Criterion Collection blu-rays?

I know their website had a 50% off sale recently but they don't ship internationally and Barnes and Noble do a buy _ get one free.

I'd probably be inclined to buy from Amazon, should I wait for their post thanksgiving sales?

Unless there's any other suggestions.

I hope this isn't beating a dead horse, but is anyone planning on picking up Children of Paradise?
I've got it in my shopping bag ready for the next B&N sale.
I share the concerns/frustrations most people have expressed, but this also looks like the only blu-ray that will be available.
The UK edition has been out for a couple of weeks, but I haven't seen a review of it yet. I assume it will look the same as the Criterion edition.

I third the suggestion. The only way to see the Japanese version with subtitles is via bootleg copies. I'm sick of mine, it looks terrible on a HDTV. It's the only Showa Godzilla film that's still completely unavailable in its original form.

I might but right now it's just too expensive on Amazon.ca at $41, I just think that for that price the quality of the release is really not there. I will probably pick up at the sale in November or if amazon.ca lower the price

Hey guys, can someone list all the BD's Criterion has done recall/replacements on?

I still have the faulty Walkabout and am wondering what else I may have with issues (I also have Days of Heaven and the Three Colors trilogy but have not watched them yet)..

Well Walkabout gets all pixelated in one scene (where he slaughters the turtle and uses it's blood to sooth the kids sunburn).

Days of Heaven not sure but there were problems according to some.

I think these problems were related to particular blu-ray players. With my old sony (I forget the model number) I had these problems, (Days of Heaven would freeze during the pheasant hunting scene and skip about 5 minutes), but with my current player the problems do not arise.

Regarding the original question, there is also an audio problem on Carlos disc 2 episode 3.

I picked it up already when B&N had their B2G1 free sale, along with some coupons. I sampled some of it, and while it does have an odd look to it, I agree with someone's comments (I forgot where I read this) that the dream-like presentation suits this kind of a film well.

I know that won't satisfy a lot of people out there who were hoping for a different look with the restoration that took place, however, this explanation seemed to make sense for Children of Paradise. And with my limited knowledge of "restorations" and how this film was intended to look, I was happy with what I saw.

I doubt we'll see anything change.

I believe during the Criterion 50% off sale at Barnes and Noble.... although I'm not positive since I'm in the U.S.

The best way to do it would be to get a proxy to buy a large amount of them for you in the states, using coupons etc... and then shipping as one box.

Gotta have someone in the states you trust though.

I just got a copy of Chungking Express from amazon and noticed three things. The case was cracked, the UPC didn't match the one in the database and the shrink wrap didn't have the Blu-ray sticker.
