I disagree with that.

Cool, we'll disagree on it. I love that we can do that here without pointlessly arguing about it

I am still ambivalent about home 3D, too, Rock. Seems like it's often just tacked on, and it does make the picture darker. I will say that both Cave and Pina looked like steps in the right direction. It was great to see the cave art in 3D because those artists used three dimensions when they executed their work, and I thought it added a lot to the dance sequences in Pina....but I saw Pina months after I saw Cave, so that might be why it's so vivid in my memory. That, and I responded to most of the dance sequences.

In any case, I thought all last year was great for movie releases, and Criterion has landed Certified Copy, Le Havre, Weekend, The Forgiveness of Blood and now Pina. Does this year seem like there's less new and interesting happening in general release film? I'm hoping the fall and winter will be stronger.

Vivre Sa Vie and Tiny Furniture are great, I would skip Fish Tank

Although I agree that I'm glad the longer cut of The Tin Drum is being used (and I can't remember which version I've seen), it is fair to say that the technology is there to provide both versions.
I for one am glad that the theatrical cut of Apocalypse Now is seamlessly branched with the Redux version on that blu-ray. I much prefer the theatrical cut.
I also find it incredibly frustrating that the original, theatrical cut of The Good, The Bad and The Ugly was never made available on blu-ray. Instead, they've used an inferior cut put together decades after the director died.

I'm as baffled by the extent of her success as the next person but I don't know that there's anything unfair about it. I haven't seen Tiny Furniture but based on the first season of Girls I would agree her stuff is pretty trite and two-dimensional but it's obviously resonating with somebody and more importantly, she's made the most of it.

Even if the initial buzz was completely unwarranted turning that into a legitimate presence probably didn't just happen.

Was it unfair that The Ramones could barely play their instruments and far better, more dedicated musicians never made it out of Kenosha?

Or is that just how it goes sometimes?

The likelihood of blu-ray upgrades for those is probably in the order you listed them. I think when they get back to Jarmusch the upgrade will be Night on Earth.

Pretty solid list of upgrades announced yesterday. I'm at least interested in watching most all of them, if not necessarily buying them. For those keeping track at home though, The Tin Drum and Pina are absolutely not blind-buy candidates.

The Hitchcock, of course, is a must-buy. Probably won't even wait for a 'discount', though I'm sure something will pop up between now and then. And...if Criterion follows the model from last year, perhaps we'll see the last Hitch title they are speculated to have the rights to release - Foreign Correspondent - sometime in the middle of the year.

Vivre sa Vie is probably Godard's best film. Godard's extremely hit-or-miss and for all I know you've seen quite a few 'misses'...so I'll add that this is the most accessible film of his I've seen. It's rough in production like Breathless, but far more polished and engaging in its storytelling then that film is. I like to recommend this film as an intro to Godard for this reason.

Fish Tank is a modern, gritty, lower-class sister to An Education. That doesn't denigrate the film at all, but they do practically tell the same story even if Fish Tank is a little more direct. I liked it quite enough.

Haven't seen Tiny Furniture, and have no real interest in doing so.

That's true, but it's a pretty ordinary poster
I imagine the studio wasn't too happy trying to market Two-Lane Blacktop back in the 70s...

The general rule around here is the sooner you buy them, the sooner they'll be upgraded

Obviously, I'd love for that to happen. I wouldn't be too shocked if some of the "Hitchcock 9" end up in the collection, especially 'The Lodger'; hopefully with a different soundtrack than the UK release.

Is it a little strange that there is no Eclipse box-set in this announcement?

They announced an extra movie instead. Did they announce an Eclipse for December?

If you are interested in watching Tiny Furniture maybe watch GIRLS first?

GIRLS is brilliant and watching Tiny Furniture afterward adds a lot of context.

I wouldn't be suprised if there was some truth to that statement. If nobody is buying the DVD, there is probably less incentive to release an upgrade on blu.
