How on earth did you accomplish that? I can't find The Third Man for less that $180 by itself, and I believe The Man Who Fell to Earth goes for a similar price. With Pierrot le Fou, I would've thought it would be around $350. Regardless though, an incredibly jealous congratulations.

To be honest, it was luck. I check the Toronto Craigslist and Kijiji Criterion ads every day to see if someone is selling it.

I found one a few weeks back that had TTM, but he wanted 200 for it. I got lucky by finding a different post yesterday a few hours after the guy listed it. I got in contact with him quickly.

I haven't seen this movie, but it sounds great. Hopefully there will be a sale on "Cronos" at the same time of The Devil's Backbone's release.

I really wish DeepDiscount would do more Deal of the Days on Criterions. I remember they did one with "Quadrophenia", but unfortunately none for "In The Mood For Love" or "The Forgiveness Of Blood". Hopefully next week, with the release of Sunday Bloody Sunday, they'll do another one!

I will have to check it out.
You should!! It's very original and unique!! It became an instant favorite of mine when I watched it the first time. It's been very few times that I've seen a movie like this. You have to watch it to understand what I'm saying, though. I'll just say it's the closest to dreaming awake.

Now, M, yes.
Hahahahaha well, I do get why you would say that. It is completely bizarre and maybe it really does depend on your mood. The thing is that I was so utterly and completely AMAZED by it. It became an instant top 10 contender for me. I'd been wanting to watch an "art film" and Marienbad succeeds and then some. I have nothing but praise for it. And the best thing is that multiple viewings don't affect it, seeing as you'll never quite fully get it.

What's Tiny Furniture about??

Well, at least we fully agree on M

World on a Wire is also a 16mm film and looks pretty good on blu-ray.

Has anyone seen the German release of Fritz Lang's M? I'm trying to decide on which edition I want, and it seems this version may be the best, picture and sound wise.

This is not really a complaint, more like an observation. Most of my Criterion Blu-rays arrive safe and sound. But recently, I've had some issues. E.g. the case looks like it's been punched in the middle(as if all the air inside the case has been sucked off). I've ordered some replacement cases directly from Criterion and they all seem to share one annoying thing in common. They make a cracking noise if you gently press on the right edge. I've only experienced this with the replacement cases. Either they are from a different batch or this has something to do with the shrink wrapping process and heat. Not an issue really but slightly annoying when you pay $15 for the cases.

Criterion recently tweeted a French "In The Realm of the Senses" poster.... perhaps as a tribute, being the closest connection they have to him?

I'm sure they had more personal connections and probably a good familiarity with his work though.

That's the version I have and would recommend first. It has the best picture and sound - featuring the audio restoration from 2001 used as the base for the Criterion and MoC releases, as well as an updated 2011 effort for this release.

The release is also pretty English-friendly, the blu being Region-free and with a handful of the extras (docs on the film and its history) including English subtitles. These are in SD though on the included DVD, which was certainly not a dealbreaker for me. Unfortunately the interview with Lang, the commentary, and the booklet are in German, though I kind of like the fact that the booklet is in German.

Of course each release has its own unique extras to offer, but the Universum is tops when it comes to A/V.

Anyone have any Criterion films they especially enjoy watching around Halloween?

House and Kuroneko fit the bill, to me.

Relatively-speaking for an import, a non-UK import specifically. The fact that the menus are (kinda) English-friendly and that a handful of the extras actually feature English subtitles, as well as its region-free playback, goes above and beyond most other similar imports.

Some might go for Night of The Hunter, but that one bored me. I'd go for Carnival of Souls.

Island of Lost Souls is always a good candidate.

I rewatched Island of Lost Souls yesterday, and am planning on Carnival of Souls today. Speaking of which, I was looking at the Carnival of Souls Wikipedia page last night, trying to remember how the two versions differ, and I came across this:

"The Academy preserved the original negative in 2012 with the creation of a new fine grain master positive, new duplicate negative, analog and digital sound masters, and new 35mm prints."

I wonder if this increases the possibility of a blu upgrade...
