Does anyone know if Vampyr is likely to be upgraded? I haven't seen the film in ages and I think I might just purchase the DVD.
The source is pretty rough throughout, and in some instances appalling. I doubt it's high on their upgrade list.

Wasn't there news recently about a restoration being done or touring?
Can't remember where I read it, but I'm pretty sure something was happening...
I would hold off on that purchase until you find out more.

I'm in the same boat and almost bought the BFI blus a few months ago.

However, there's a couple of extras on the BFI disks I might end up double dipping for if the BFI price comes down any time -

- On the Decameron disk, Notes for an African Oresteria (1970, b&w, 1.33:1, 73 minutes)

- On the Canterbury Tales disk, "Exclusive new documentary exploring Pasolini's significance on the Italian genre film "

it's obvious that most of the people in this thread are huge film buffs! I've started adding titles from the Criterion collection to my Netflix queue. I've watched about 10 and can say some have been hit or miss. Walkabout, La Haine, Paths of Glory, Hunger and Days of Heaven were great.

Down By Law, 8 1/2 not so much. So overall a I've enjoyed most of what I have seen. I realize I'm just delving into these films but are there any that are recommended by people in this forum?

Yi Yi is a must own title - my personal pick for the best film released in the 21st century (so far).

In the case of Le petit soldat and Les Carabiniers, though, the video-like effect actually lends the films a sort of documentary quality.
Can you imagine the outrage on these forums if someone like Criterion made similar claims about a blu ray release?

Indeed. I don't think anyone takes New Yorker seriously in this regard. I've seen some of their prints projected and they range from acceptable to terrible.

That is taken from a Fox Lorber dvd and not New Yorker. Le Petit Soldat (from which that photo is taken) and Les Carabiniers were released on dvd by Fox Lorber. WeekEnd, New Yorker Films.

Congrats. Now, if you could just get a copy of The Third Man at that price.

The BD for TMWFTE is spectacular!

I plan on getting it very soon. Anything under $100 is fair game for me.
