All it is is an upgrade, it's not a different movie, it's still The Tin Drum, just a new restoration and reconstruction. You can get both for the sake of having a "complete" collection, but according to Criterion both versions are the "real" versions of the film, just the new version is an upgrade.

As for the post, no one was psychic when it came to the restoration, they didn't know in 2004. The original forum post on criterionforums was made in 2004, but in order to reflect the new upgrade that was recently announced, the person went back to their old post and updated it so whenever a newcomer went to the thread they could see all the new info.

It's not that difficult.

I think the new version is a different film. It runs about 20 minutes longer. It is not the film that won the awards that the theatrical release won.

It's soviet-style to rewrite previous posts, as though the 2004 release doesn't exist. I do believe that it would be better if that thread was renamed something like, "The Tin Drum (2004)" and a new thread created, labeled, "The Tin Drum (2013)." As for the spine numbers, they should use something like number.version whenever anything changes, so they would number the new release 234.2013 or 234.1, whatever. The initial release could still be numbered 234. Someone who wants to see the theatrical release, the release that was talked about and written about, cares about such things. I would imagine that film historians do, too.

The new release contains comments by the novel's author about the novel's adaptation to film. Are those comments about the theatrical release or the new release? If I remember correctly, those comments were made years before the new version was created. Would he have the same things to say, if he were commenting on the new version?

Anyway, the 2004 DVD is good looking for a DVD (upscaled) and is apparently out-of-print, so it may be the more "valuable" release, even if some people consider the new one to be an "upgrade."

I've heard that there is a UK Blu-ray release that has both cuts but is region locked.

What about moving kickoffs back to the thirty? Any thoughts on that?

Well! I am done with "The Tin Drum" and will rest comfortably knowing that a proper cut is available on DVD at my library.

Now, I may dredge-up a comment about "Rosemary," made by Roman Polanski. In the DVD's extras he says at one point that he deliberately made ambiguous whether "Rosemary" had fallen prey to some Satanists or was simply suffering from "post-partum crazies." Those were his words, if I remember correctly. Should he have said "pre-partum crazies?"

Both are pretty awesome IMO. In fact it's an interesting combo since both films rely more on visuals rather than dialog and plot events to sell the story.

I just bought "The Third Man".

It was sort of a deal. It was the OOP DigiPack version and it was listed at $210 and I got it for $170 with Free Shipping.

You're probably right, it's been a long time since I've seen anything but the Italian version, and that's been a while, and I've never seen it in French. I welcome any correction of factual errors on my part

Haha thanks.

It was probably the most money I spent on one item and it will probably be the last time that that happens

That's what "First Pressing", "Second Pressing", etc. on the back of the packaging is for.

Man, Criterion needs to re-issue this for us who didn't get a blu-ray player until after it was already out of print.

Of course if they could, it wouldn't be out of print.

They "could"? Probably won't but they could buy the rights back and while they are at it get the rights to Peeping Tom back as well and get that on BR for us.

But they managed to grab Badlands from Warner so I am happy!

Speaking of Warner actually leasing out a title...I would love to see Criterion get The Asphalt Jungle leased from them.
