It was pretty awesome. Hopefully that happens tonight. But be aware, it was only open for about an hour or two!
That would be nice, but there isn't a Buy 2 Get 1 Free sale happening now, so there is no sale to overlap with.

Hearing rumors on other thread that Playtime and Howard's End are going OOP. Can anybody verify this?

That would be nice, but the sale is still a great deal.

Yep. Criterion lost the rights to the Tati films, and there is currently a lawsuit between Merchant Ivory and Janus that involves 20+ films, including Howards End.

To *all* the Tati films, or just Playtime? Because I might get Playtime, I've seen it being used a lot in my film textbook. I also can't resist the OOP stuff.

EDIT: I knew Trafic was OOP already

Just to clarify about the Tati films, Criterion still have the rights.

StudioCanal will be taking over once Criterion's last contract expires, but who knows when that will be. It was announced back in July that SC had won the rights, and all of Criterion's Tati releases are still in print.

Indeed, SC won worldwide rights, not just NA, and yet the BFI have just this week upgraded two Tati films to Blu-ray in the UK. They too will be losing the rights to SC at some point. So there isn't really a rush to pick up Playtime, nor is it impossible that Criterion won't upgrade other Tati titles.

When rights expire and are not renewed, they may be allowed to sell existing stock ... depends on their agreement with the film's owner.

As you mentioned, they won the rights starting in July, when the deal was announced. For that reason, speculation was that Criterion wouldn't be printing any more. Who knows when they will actually go out of print, since Criterion doesn't talk about their contracts, but it probably isn't a bad idea to pick them up soon rather than later.

I am thinking of buying "The Game" Criterion, can anyone tell me if this is like most Criterions and very much worth it?
I imagine it is, I was just hoping for a little back and forth from a few owners telling me e best things about it.
Thanks

Yes, but as I said they won worldwide distribution rights. So BFI are in the same situation as Criterion, yet they released two new Tati titles 4 months after the July deal. The rights change clearly isn't affecting them yet.

And as soon as Criterion lost the rights to Chunking Express, it was listed OOP on their site and they could no longer sell it. Plenty of stock at the usual places though. I know there is variation between contracts and such, but I think that's telling.

I still have a couple of blind buys on my shelf from last November's B&N sale - the few remaining holdouts that I always seem to bypass when I want to watch a Criterion, for whatever reason or mood. Last night I put in Kes. After the first ten minutes I had figured out that it is a form of English being spoken, as I could understand about every third word. I thought I was prepared for it, having been forewarned by posts here where the film's dialect is discussed, but I was quickly humbled and exhausted by the effort.

After repeatedly hitting the remote back button, I gave up and switched on the hearing impaired subtitles. Seeing the words, or at least the frequently truncated forms written on the screen, my ears began to get in the groove. It was interesting to see that some of the slurred unintelligible words were actually "thee" and "thou", along with other older or slang forms of words, all twisted up with a brogue.

Watching Kes, I suddenly remembered the speech of some of the old watermen I had encountered in the communities of tidewater Virginia, where I had spent some time in 1990 while working on a research vessel. I had the hardest time understanding their mumbled form of speaking, but my "interpreter" explained that many of these communities had been effectively isolated by rivers and marshes and some had retained many colloquialisms in their speech, including the use of thee and thou.

Sadly, that experience did not help much with Kes, and I was forced to rely on the subtitles most of the film. I could understand some of the adults without the subs, but nearly all the kids and "our Jud" were damn near impossible. For anyone who has not seen the movie, it is worth making the effort. Kes is a gritty, almost documentary-style film about a frequently mistreated working-class boy, basically a good kid but rough around the edges. The boy discovers something transcendent inside himself that allows him to mentally escape the drudgery of growing up in a northern England mining town when he finds a hawk (kestrel) and teaches himself how to train it. The bond he develops with the bird becomes the sole saving grace in his misfit life.

Over at B&N.com I just pre-ordered Heaven's Gate, Brazil and Following at 50% off. For some reason the January titles are not getting the 50% off though.

I strongly recommend watching the extra film that is on the Kes disc, Cathy Come Home. You can read about it here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cathy_Come_Home

An industry poll rated it as the best British television drama ever made

I say it almost holds up to that statement, indeed I prefer it over Kes (although I love that too, especially since people round our way still half talk like that )

LOL. I loved that overlapping sale last time because it made up for my store no longer taking coupons.

Maybe there will be a B2G1 overlap at the END of this one?

If it was, that would be GLORIOUS!

When I started to refresh the page at the beginning of the sale, the .jpeg of the Criterion banner that said "50% off all Criterion titles" didn't load properly, and it had something that said "Buy 2, get the 3rd one free on all Criterion Blu-Rays."

Unfortunately.....that wasn't true....

Whoa, since when do B&N allow for the December pre-orders to be included, as they fall outside of the sale?

Yes, yes I'm still alive and polluting the thread with my 3 orders. I've been rather busy with other things, and had to cancel my initial preorders, but B&N's sale has fixed things:

Order 1:
In The Mood For Love
Rosemary's Baby
Bonanza: Adventures with the Cartwrights (this is for my Uncle with Alzheimer's, he really likes watching the show now, so we're grabbing a new DVD set that has different episodes, and it's only 5 bucks)
Breathless
Black Orpheus

Order 2:
Rashomon
Week End
Eating Raoul
Vivre sa vie

Order 3:
Purple Noon
Brazil
