I just finished viewing Heaven's Gate. Fantastic package with some really interesting supplemental features.

The film -- I will say this: The more things change, the more they stay the same (recent events in the state of Arizona prove it). There is a good reason why the film rubbed a lot of people the wrong way, and was ultimately destroyed in America by various critics and other parties pulling strings behind the scenes. There is also a good reason why it generated different reviews in more liberal parts of Europe. As it is almost always the case, the truth is somewhere in the middle.

But this isn't exactly news. If you listen to the audio commentary on The Deer Hunter, which in my opinion is one of the very best ever done for a home video release, Cimino makes it very clear where he stands and what worries/ed him.

In any event, I think that many younger viewers will find Heaven's Gate to be a surprisingly relevant film. Which, really, is extremely sad.

Kudos to Criterion for saving yet another very important American film.

Why wait for 40% off when you can preorder it right now for 50% off?

During last July's B&N sale I ordered the Three Colors set online, and happily the 'White' disc was in fact the second, corrected, printing. The original run must be flushed out of the warehouse system, but i'm not surprised that individual stores still have some of them languishing on the shelves.

Totally agree. Unfortunately I don't have the time any more to listen to audio commentaries like I used to. But the Deer Hunter commentary sort of stayed with me. Very personal, very interesting.

When should we get the February releases? Wil BN have them for Pre-order before the sale ends?

I'm getting the feeling this must be a YMMV kind of thing. I visited a B&N store yesterday and asked if I could preorder Brazil at 50% off, as part of the sale. I was told that since the bluray wouldn't be released until after the sale was over, it wasn't eligible for the 50% off sale price. But if you go to the B&N website, it is on sale. (oogily-moogily ... )

(Especially for those of us who used to get our anime untranslated on imported VHS, and actually used to watch those wacky hyper-cutesy sponsor messages during the breaks. And to think, the Simpsons thought themselves so clever...)

I had too much work to sit down with the annual traditional "Something Wicked This Way Comes" ( ), and found I wasn't in the mood, but at least had enough attention for Great Pumpkin, and finally on Blu this year. At least that's some tradition.
Maybe next year I'll spring for that Warner Archive disk of "Ray Bradbury's 'The Halloween Tree'."

(Never occurred to me to watch Monkee Mash--as I never liked Bob Rafelson's backhandedly self-contemptuous gagged-up/fourth-wall episodes compared to Jim Frawley's more easygoing ones--and darn, still haven't gotten a copy of Ghoul School yet, although it's surprisingly more watchable than "SD&Reluctant Werewolf".)
I like MMM. It has some great character actors in it. It was directed by James Frawley, and there's always some form of breaking the fourth wall in evey episode of the Monkees.

Didn't get to watch Ghoul School, but I did get to Hausu.

Apparently so. Normally these storms hit the Maritimes harder than Ontario/Quebec, but Sandy shifted inland this time.

Hausu is a fun film, and I don't understand why people say it's only watchable once. I still laugh and pick up on new things that I didn't see the previous viewings.

Aw man, that sucks. Do they still send out $10 certificates to those with defective discs? And are there other Criterion blus with issues? I still have few unopened ones...

Welcome to the world of B&N.
Not sure why you don't just order it from dotcom instead of trying to order through the store...I don't think ship-to-home orders get the 10 percent in-store discount(?).

I ordered my copy online, so I didn't receive it yet....

My Halloween night consisted of 1 Criterion BD, 1 previously Criterion held film's non Criterion BD, and a Red-Box rental.

Watched Hausu again, watched Silence of the Lambs, and via Red-Box I picked up "The Artist"

When I got "The Artist" the first thing I see when it spits it out is a Sticky-Note inside the case saying "DOES NOT PLAY" and I think "Great, that stinks" was going to rent a back-up copy, but thought screw-it......

Either way, I get home, toss it in the player, and it plays flawlessly (I checked for cracks, found none, and it was in immaculate shape)

Gotta love people who don't understand that either A) BD will not play in their DVD player, or B) Firmware should be upgraded every couple millenium!

I'm not sure why either. I guess I'm just used to going to the physical stores. Maybe it's the instant gratification. ???

You never can tell what you'll get with B&N. I'm pretty sure I was able to order Jan '12 titles in the Nov '11 sale, not working this time though (did pick up the Dec titles I wanted). I had pretty much given up on going to the stores because I was denied coupon stacking & so when I went into one during the July sale... they let me stack the coupons. So go figure.
