Also, Amazon has it for 30 bucks right now: http://www.amazon.com/Heavens-Gate-C...eaven%27s+gate

Interesting, B&N jacked the price back up on Rashomon and Week End too, even though they're coming out during the sale. Good thing I got my orders in for them, and Brazil and Purple Noon.
The movie is great but I will NOT pay more than $8 for it due to an extreme lack of special features. How in the hell the reviewer can give t his 4.5 out of 5 in the special features score box disgusts and baffles me and makes every word of the review uncredible.

Ok Criterion. I am done with you. Charging obscene prices and giving us damn near nothing. I will put my money towards releases that give something of better value
I completely agree that Heaven's Gate seems a little light in the extras department.
Luckily you can get obscene discounts from both Amazon and Barnes & Noble at the moment

I was very disappointed that they dropped the extra on the real Johnson County Wars that was first announced. That sounded like the most interesting extra to me.

Thanks! I lost over 700 essays/reviews on my blog but fortunately I write in Word and save every draft! I'll repost my Teshigahara reviews in the next week because I want to revist the films.

I watched De Sica's UMBERTO D. last night. I picked this up as part of the B&N sale on Tuesday along with CUL-DE-SAC and IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE. I really need to put some of my feelings into as essay (though that is often more confining than the moving image) but was truly moved. Though the plight of Umberto and his dog Flike are set in post-WW II Italy where inflation was rampant and pensions slashed, it is a prescient story in our own world economy. And how in the world did De Sica film that scene in the final act? Without giving any details away, it had to be very very dangerous! I can't recommend this film enough and hope SHOESHINE and THE GARDEN OF THE FINZI-CONTINIS are released on blu!

Interesting statement of dismissal considering there are 7 features and they have their own disc. I think the time frame of the features has you unsold. Quantity does not mean Quality. A features does not have to be an hour in length for it to be 'quality'...

As for the review, I think the content of the film is possibly 5 stars. The film itself, especially in structure, is generally 'all over the place', so 5 stars is a little high IMO. But as usual, a fair review from Pro-B...

The film is over three and a half hours. Criterion did the right thing of giving the special features their own disc, as it would probably have compromised the quality of the main feature if they all were on on disc.

After doing some reading and a few youtube searches, I really want to see Goke and The Living Skeleton (the b&w photography looks great). Unfortunately, B&N just jacked up the price on this set. Not into doing a $50 blind buy so I will hold out hope that NetFlix gets the discs (they seem to get most of the Eclipse stuff).

B&N used to have a 50% off DVDs sale, including Criterion DVDs. I am not sure if they still do this. If they had one in 2012, I missed it, but wasn't looking for it either. I seem to recall this was held around March. If they still have this, it would be a good time to get Eclipse sets - and I hope they still have the sale, because I missed out on the 50% off pre-order of When Horror Came to Shochiku.

Yeah I'm sorry my collection doesn't consist entirely of Criterion films, which are of course all masterpieces of world cinema. Apparently this doesn't entitle me to an opinion... Your collection is huge - almost twice as big as mine - and full of shit. What the hell is your point? I could stop at the first two titles. Are you telling me ALL 1092 Blu-rays you have are good films? Because I sure as hell couldn't say that about the 3000 DVDs and Blu-rays I have.

You are in absolutely no position to criticize 13th Warrior when you have all The Fast and the Furious films and I Love You, Man in your collection. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

I get the impression you haven't even seen Heaven's Gate. This restored version is no different in terms of content. I'm not going to watch the Blu-ray and say: 'Remember all those huge problems I had with the film before? Well they've gone now because it looks so good'.
Haha, you're funny. Why even comment about ripping apart a review and a reviewer if you obviously don't like a film? Just to troll?

I'm in no position to criticize, because I don't care. I'm not the one getting up in arms over a 5-star rating. See how that works? It's pretty hypocritical to criticize one person's opinion, the defend titles you own and know aren't very good. And seeing how every single person who loves and owns movies likes junk now and then, it's pretty pointless to get worked up over films other people like.

And, wrong again, I've seen Heaven's Gate. It was always underrated and a better film than it's box office. Go check out reviews from Venice, the NY Fest, and look at all the people who rated it a "masterpiece." I guess Robin Wood and all the others must suck, too.

From the Heaven's Gate review:

"Those who have spoken against Heaven's Gate or outright dismissed it as a grandiose failure must have their heads checked. Or admit that they are idiots."

Wow. I've long thought this particular writer's reviews were substandard (I have a hard time seeing a simple play-by-play of a film - 'A happens, then B happens, then C happens' - as a 'review') but this comment lowers the credibility of the writer even further. Can't we get one of the other stellar reviewers on Criterion duty from now on??

I'm disappointed, Blu-Ray.com!

I really really wanted to pre-order this with the discount....any chance I can do so in stores if I ask someone there? Sounds unlikely, but I'm really disappointed I missed out on it

I'm disappointed, Blu-Ray.com!
Heaven's Gate is an overwrought and ridiculous film with no redeeming qualities save for some of the cinematography. There's a reason it has been critic fodder for over 30 years. It stunk!

Wow, Heaven's Gate is rather polarising isn't it? If B&N put it back to $25 I'll maybe blind buy it. See what all the fuss is about!

What's wrong with it? I keep reading such polarizing opinions, and am curious about that....I've never seen it and the brief summary in the review doesn't sound particularly terrible or special to me.
