+1

The only ones I can see are City Lights and Spartacus.

MAYBE, very big MAYBE, Death Wish and The Right Stuff, otherwise, I don't think "The Land Before Time" or "Tarzan, The Ape Man" will make it to Criterion anytime soon

Johnny Weissmuller is an absolute legend and his Tarzan movies are right up Criterion's alley.

Woah woah, gotta stand by naggy on Tarzan and the Ape Man. Great film, I would love a BD and it'd fit fine in the CC. You wanna pick out a completely nuts suggestions let's go with King Kong Lives!

80's was an incredible decade and a lot of the movies had an unmatched charm about them. They are as important as anything else

I agree about the 80's charm...but however that kind of charm usually doesn't fall under the Criterion scope.

I think Cimino's Year of the Dragon could fit into the CC though....just bringing it up cause it's from the 80's.

The way you interpret that mission statement is your opinion, not fact. And I'm not sure you understand what Criterion is all about. Criterion has been very liberal and varied in their choices:

RoboCop
Videodrome
Hard Boiled
The Killer
Silence of the Lambs
Time Bandits
Armageddon
The Rock
The Blob

And dozens of other titles.

Almost all of those films have been very culturally significant - and one a Best Picture winner. Unfortunately, American Ninja, King Kong Lives and House II are not. A few of the titles I could see making the collection, though, like Terms of Endearment (they have a relationship with James L. Brooks/Broadcast news), Spartacus, and of course City Lights will be released, since they own the Chaplin catalog. Fantastic Voyage is already due from Fox in 2013.

And how was Armageddon, or The Rock more culturally significant than anything on my wish list?

Good to hear in regards to Fantastic Voyage for 2013

Those were actually released back in the laserdisc days and on specific request by the director.

Some hardcore Criterion fans have argued that they fulfill the mission statement by filling out 'the big summer blockbuster' kind of movie slot in the collection.

Personally, I think Criterion just saw a big paycheck, making it possible for them to release other more esoteric titles that would not necessary make profit.

I just watched Something Wild, a pretty good little Jonathan Demme film,I would love to see "Melvin and Howard" get a Criterion release, Paul Le Mat, Mary Steenburgen, and the late Jason Robards were great in that film, I have the rare OOP Anchor Bay dvd with commentary.

I am hoping that Warner Bros will release Before Sunrise and Before Sunset on Bluray with the new movie coming out but if not I would love to have Criterion release a trilogy set.

There's enough Naruse films on Hulu now, that would make a GREAT Eclipse set...unless they decide to release them on blu.

Agreed on this...and they would look great on blu!

For those of you who wanted to order Rashomon online today...B&N.com has the price listed at $34.04. I'm doing in store pickup to hopefully get the proper discounted price.
