I paid 115 plus tax for it on Amazon Canada when it first came out. It's worth it, despite the Jaglom film. Btw, Head had its 44th anniversary of release yesterday.

One film I will love seeing in the collection is Brian De Palma's Carrie. The MGM BD is bad and a Criterion upgrade will surely look better. I hope MGM license that title to Criterion like many others of their catalog (including De Palma's Blow Out) so we can maybe see a new release next year and, with the remake being released in March, it will be nice to have the original in a great edition.

Check out the dramatic change in detail in these before and after shots from Criterion Forum:

Thumbs down

Still havent gotten a shipping notice for Rashomon...it says usually ships within 24 hours, then it says within 2 business days. If they dont ship it out by the weekend, im tempted to cancel the order , find some stuff to trade and it get it at a store for the same price after trading...
I like their sales, but this has slowed the service down too much

The film ends nicely, with the blob rendered harmless, unless... unless....

I watched it myself just recently. I need ot watch it again for the commentary. I'd never seen the original, though I enjoyed the 1972 Son of Blob sequel in which Godfrey Cambridge is engulfed by the blob while he's watching the original film on TV.
Some of the close-ups of Steve McQueen and his girlfriend are very sharp, so this could make a great Blu-ray. The blob-o-bilia has some ineresting photos -- wide shots of the sets, the models ... enough to give people some insight into Hollywood "magic" and movie making in general.

I can see how "The Blob" is an important part of Sci-fi and horror film history, so it should be released on Blu-ray. It also has some camp qualities and goofs: It sounded like someone said "foregone transfusion" for "foregone conclusion" (just before 13:23), ... .

huge? Have you seen the CC dvd? At much less resolution, the CC dvd has much better detail on many scenes than the new blu. You may be confusing the cleanliness of the image with detail. The new blu is very clean, but there are many instances were detail is much worse than the CC dvd which is what the fuss is about.

Anyone have any news on "The Ice Storm"? I've been waiting for this on blu for awhile, and it seems to be only available as a region B from Germany.

You are probably right. I had the dvd too. Im probably just distracted by the cleanliness and brightness. The main thing is that I wasnt as thrown off as i was expecting. And for 10 dollars (B&N 8 dollar off coupon), im happy that I got it!

I would honestly and truly have preferred a Blu-ray that looks like the first cap, extensive damage and all. Le Samourai better not suffer the same fate.

While I'm still on the fence about this because I was excited about the restoration (I want to believe!), I can't bring myself to pull the trigger. That said, I'm not hopeful for a better version ever coming along.
Joe, I kept my dvd, probably for comparison sake, but I will also keep the blu. There are several shots that are stunning and not affected by the cleaning. Unfortunately, they do not outweight the bad ones. IMO, if it wasn't a 'staple' and an enjoyable film, I would be tempted to sell the blu. Frankly, I assume this as the only release Criterion will have, before another medium is brought to the market.....

If you read the reviews on the French release of Le Samourai and Criterion uses the same Pathe restoration they used, you may been in for the same situation.

I'm quite familiar with it, and I think it's a whole other ball game. Children of Paradise looks bad, but it has nothing on Le Samourai, which looks more like a stylistic video game than a film:

My faith in Criterion as a purveyor of quality product will be greatly diminished if they just stick that on their release. They can't use the "we didn't do the restoration so it's not our fault" excuse again and again. Either figure it out, pay for your own people to do a new version, or don't bother.

Is that the discontinued embossed digipak of Marienbad? I liked the look of it but it didn't fit in with the rest of my collection.

It was an awfully tight fit, too.

Watched 3 Women. Jesus, this movie is off-puttingly good. Reminded me of Single White Female.

I guess I'm one of those people who just can't tell the difference between digital noise and film grain. The Carrie transfer looks great to me.

I wish someone would get around to releasing Body Double. Def my favourite De Palma.

With the release of the Carrie remake and De Palma's Passion this year with luck we'll get a few more blu upgrades.

That seems like a likely candidate for Twilight Time.
