My point exactly, that image is wrong but I think that is in fact the Chungking Express Criterion BD.

That was the first release of the slip of LY@M. They actually went back and re-released the film with a better fit slip. I have all 3 (the original tight release, the much better fit slip, and the replacement case. Don't know why I bought the replacement case, as I still use the 2nd release of the slip. I like the cardboard look better anyways.)

Anyone who’s seen Playtime can give any insights to it? Is it worth a blind buy? I’ve been reading a lot of positive reviews but I want to read regular consumers impressions. Thanks for your help!

I like the cardboard look as well...the only thing I don't like about the cardboard ones is their habit of slanting to the side (kind of how the single 'folder' cases in the boxed sets like the Three colors set usually do).

I enjoyed PLAY TIME very much. Tati's film is one the funniest I've ever seen, where the humor kinda sneaks up on you. Here's a bit of my review: "Every composition is framed with purpose, and multiple viewings will reward the audience with new and whimsical elements: PLAY TIME is playfully elegant. Final Grade: (A+)"

Definately (IMHO) worth a blind buy during the B&N sale!

Thank you for your insight! I was torn between this one and Summer with Monika but since I already have three Bergman BDs I’m gonna buy Playtime this time.

Playtime is awesome! If you dont like it the first time you watch it, give a week let it soak in and watch it again, you will LOVE it.

Thanks! I’ve read a lot of positive things about this movie. I’m convinced I’m gonna like it.

Some of you may have already seen this, but in response to a request for a hint about the February releases on their Facebook page, Criterion said, "Sure, a film with Kyoko Kagawa is getting a Blu-ray upgrade." Most people are assuming that it will be Tokyo Story, which would make sense to me. (HT to CriterionCast on Twitter)

See, this is a tough call...

Region A releases of Tokyo Story or Sansho the Bailiff would definitely be welcome but The Bad Sleep Well or Red Beard would be pretty nice too.

Yeah, there are definitely a few possible titles. Tokyo Story just made sense to me because of its prominence on the recent Sight and Sound poll.

I wonder if we give them too much credit sometimes. Or maybe more accurately, have an unrealistic view of how their releases are scheduled.

We paint these mental pictures of reams of market data and subtle machinations but maybe they just release stuff when it's ready and leave all the thematic contextual spin (oh look, they're on a samurai kick, wait, no, it's noir week, nope, wait, hang on...) to us.

I've only watched it once, but I didn't find it all that funny. I actually found it quite boring. I did find some of the framings and "background humor" to be clever at times - even ingenious in a few scenes. But about the most reaction it ever got out of me was "oh, that's clever". Can't say I ever really laughed. It wasn't a particularly long film, but for what it was I also felt like it overextended it's welcome by at least 30 minutes.

I actually would put Playtime among the bottom as far as the Criterion's I've purchased. For me it was also a blind buy. So I wouldn't recommend it unless you are already familiar with Tati and have seen some of his other (better) films first.

I would certainly love to see Tokyo Story get the nod...but would not be upset at all if they finally released their first Mizo on blu.

But don't count out Naruse...as Kyoko Kagawa is in his 1952 film "Mother", which is currently running on CC's Hulu channel. And that would trump Tokyo Story, as far as I'm concerned.
