Also possible that Criterion only has streaming rights when something appears on Hulu.
That's not to say that it can't do physical media, just that it's likely to require a broader license ... more $$$

Excellent point. Still, those stats can be used to help identify which are titles where they can identify unexpectedly high ROI, making it worth the money.

Why are they re-releasing the BRD Trilogy with an upgrade?? I've held off on this for a while so this would be great timing and interesting news...

Also, because I've never seen them in full, I'd love to add Eraserhead and the Apu Trilogy to the big C.

Rights switched over from Wellspring to Janus. So the old release went OOP and they are re-releasing the films. Easy as that.

Question

I finially watched my copy of 'Design for Living' and in the middle of the film a white line (top to bottom) appears. It gets brighter towards the end of the film. The booklet says it was remastered and cleaned of all imperfections...whats the line doing there then?? Plus theres a bit of flicker. Was the master THAT bad?

Does anyone know if there is a way to tell if a Three Colors Trilogy box set has the corrected White disc in it without opening it?

I have an unopened set of The Three Colors Trilogy bought a year ago at B&N on release day, containing the faulty White disc. Until recently, it has been sitting in a box in storage. I was going to open the set and send the faulty disc to Criterion, but tonight I was in a B&N and on a whim, told the media manager about it. It still has the B&N sticker on it, and I still have the receipt with it. To my surprise, he said I could bring it in and do a straight up exchange, no problem. Just to be safe, he took the two copies of the trilogy in stock and scanned them to see when they arrived in-store. They came up July 2012. However, they shipped from B&N's warehouse, and he had no way to tell how long they had been there before being sent out to the store.

On the back of the outer box, in the small print, under the words "Blu-ray edition", at the bottom of the paragraph that starts "Under exclusive license..."... my faulty edition ends with "Printed in USA. First printing 2011." I imagine that last part might read differently on the fixed versions.

For sure the writing around the "White" disc itself specifies 2nd printing on the new ones.

I wish I had looked more carefully... I got a faulty one, and I only bought in-store last month. So they are still out there.

I don’t know if this has been posted before but looks absolutely amazing!!

Wong Kar-Wai’s The Grandmasters:

Even if it doesn’t have english subtitles, it can’t be denied that the movie looks stupendous. Very excited to see this!!

Hopefully Criterion will acquire the license for BD distribution.

Should get one. Maria Braun's aspect ratio should be fixed, and I'm 99% sure they will release them on blu-ray. I have the dvd set, so I'm actually hoping they have some Fassbinder not released yet (like Lili Marleen). But I can't say no to this.

Well we got Fassbinder for February last year so lets hope history repeats!

Fingers crossed for my favourites Chinese Roulette, Petra von Kant and Lili Marleen on bluray.

i wish the films being on Hulu meant that they were all in the running for blu releases. that would mean there was a chance in hell that we'd get a Zatoichi Criterion release, and i doubt that's happening.

i can dream though.

Hmm...what are the chances that Criterion would release a film like Waitress?

I love that little film. I have no acumen for Criterion predictions but I can't imagine its a contender.

I still have my Criterion BRD Trilogy DVD Set and it is mint. I picked it up a few years back and barely touched it aside from watching the discs once. Debating on selling it on amazon but like it has been pointed out I would like all the old extras carried over to the BLU set. hate to lose extras.

Design for Living was supposed to be in pretty bad shape.

I've seen that vertical line in DOZEN's of blu-rays, especially older films. Surprised it's the first time you've noticed it. I've often wondered if its something that could be "cleaned up", but I've seen it in some MUCH better transfers than Design for Living - which is by no means a pristine source. So my guess is at this time it cannot be cleaned up efficiently without perhaps doing the "frame by frame" restoration.

It must have to do with mechanically running films through the scanner, as it's a flaw that would be commonly present if you are watching films at an old school theater with 35mm (non-digital) projector. I wonder if the mechanics of doing that over the years etches that fine line into the film itself? Hopefully it's not something that is introduced in the "transfer process", which would mean a flaw only endemic to the Criterion release (i.e. that they could have done better if they were more careful). However either way, I'm thinking if they REALLY wanted to remove such lines in the "digital restoration" process they could. But there might not be software (yet) that can do it efficiently and affordably.

Yeah, I wasn't sure. Only way is to check the disc then.

This would be cool with me, anyone know if there is a rights road block?
