Short and to the point! It does sound like a can't miss approach. Hmmmm.

Personally, I'd recommend against blind buying as I've viewed quite a lot of the releases and felt they didn't need a repeat viewing.
Well, part of me wants to play it safe, but another part wants to take a chance and explore (like your first sentence more or less says). I like the idea of viewing trailers first.

A reason I don't have some of the films I know are my favorites is because I've seen them so many times already (or recently enough) that they're still fairly fresh in my memory (... as fresh as my memory will allow anyway. ).

I need to step away for a while. Thanks for the replies ... and thanks in advance should anymore thoughts/suggestions pop up.

Possession is amazing. Day 1 buy.

Diabolique is already on blu-ray... the superior, original version. Not the Hollywood version with the awful ending.

Speaking of Adjani, I'd like to see Camille Claudel, Nosferatu, The Story of Adele H and especially Queen Margot. And maybe that Ishtar blu can finally come out (I'm not paying over $100 for the leaked pre-release copies I've found).

As remakes go that one wasn't half-bad.

I just bought bottle rocket, and the cover art is much shorter than my other criterions, and it leaves a decent size gap between the artwork and the top of the case. Anyone else have this?

Yes, yes you do. Apparently you have until the 26th to do so now. I've spent my wad, now I'm just playing the Canada Post silly bugger game.

I pretty much have been trying to go through the various reviews ... mostly in here, but also on Amazon.com. I hate sitting around all day reading reviews though. When/if I think of it, I might look for little snippets of films that seem interesting on youtube. But like I said, it sure is time-consuming and even a little bit draining.

Does anybody have a method they use to narrow the choices down? Just curious ... not that I expect it to help.
I go by director, country, sometimes actors, and plot summary. Plot summary is key in most of my decisions. Some are just no brainers, as in I've seen them before and enjoy them, so I buy them.

Also, buy the BBS set if you don't own it already. A Safe Place sucks, but Head, Five Easy Pieces, and the King of Marvin Gardens more than compensate for it. The Last Picture Show, Easy Rider, and Drive He Said are good too. The latter has begun to grow on me.

Got my B&N orders earlier this week:

I went and saw the first three of this lot already. Generally enjoyed Rosemary's Baby, mostly for its second half rather than its first half. Eating Raoul was a surprising hoot of a movie, and might be one of the most entertaining Criterion films of them all, so I was very pleased with it. White Material was a bit of a letdown, as I was expecting more to it, but it had its moments.

I also just finished watching World on a Wire, from last month's flash sale. Man, that was long. Not a bad film or story, but it just went on and on and on...it had me wanting to pop the Matrix instead, I swear. WoaW has some interesting parts, I just wish it wasn't so long and slow.

Will check out Tokyo Drifter and this here Samurai Trilogy as soon as I can.

Well, it still comes down to a question of personal tastes and interests. Not all Criterions are going to appeal to all people~ there's no infallibility implied with the label, in fact there are often some real splits of honest opinion here between well-meaning people as to what comprises a good Criterion choice and one that isn't as exciting. It's the quality of the product and the packaging that's not in dispute.

The reviews here and the postings that eventually accumulate over the weeks and months are invaluable, in conjunction with some of the other web sites available. It's amazing how much you can pick up in terms of the production values and the aesthetics involved from a two-or-three minute youtube clip. Be careful of the Amazon.com reviews~ they're just folks with an opinion, some of it is informed, some isn't. There's no rush to pick up everything that comes down the chute, patience is still a virtue and anticipation really is half the fun.

Remarkably, I've yet to be disappointed in a Criterion purchase~ perhaps I'm playing it too safe...ok there was one that I was underwhelmed by, which will remain nameless lest someone god forbid be offended, but generally I've been delighted with my choices. Which is not to say, going back to the original point, that you would be.

I suspect the 'I'd rather be watching The Matrix' bit was the part that had foreheads meeting desks

Mondo Vision are doing the region 1 release of Possession (with the rest of the Zulawski catalogue).

Last word from them was that it will be bluray if they can do it affordably.

Monkees-wise, I may be seeing them in Manhattan this December. The ticket isn't the problem, but complications could get in the way.
Oh God...you too? I bought the last DVD release of it, when it was first released. I gushed...the soon to come blu-ray was the last thing I ordered during a one month trial of Prime. Can't wait to see it again in 1080P. A wonderful and intensely sad film.

Cool! Enjoy it Shell! Wish I could afford the cost and time to come out from NYS to see it. Guess I'll just have to wait for the BFI release. Glad that Hulu has aired two of his films that haven't seen a release yet. The Gangster films are coming out next March.
