Ah, thank you! You just helped me choose my final 3 ... for now anyway. :-)

EDIT: And I know that shouldn't be used as a "criterion", but I need to run now ... so it helps when in a pinch.

Coming in a month or so we'll do the Big 2012 poll.

Tentative polls:
  • Best Release
  • Worst Release
  • Best Upgrade
  • Worst Upgrade
  • What were they thinking?
  • Biggest Surprise of the Year

If anyone has any other ideas please let me know!

Easily the Worst:

Being John Malkovich
The A Night to Remember's cover is nice, I just can't get over that they used a screenshot from James Cameron's Titanic.

I chose Rashoman as the best-looking cover and Children of Paradise as the worst. Thing looks like a little old lady's dining room wallpaper.

My vote(s): Harold and Maude; Rashomon; Trilogy of Life. Worst: Certified Copy.

I figured it out. I just hadn't read back far enough.

For my covers:
Le Cercle Rouge
Army of Shadows
The Gold Rush
Charade
Diabolique

Yeah, I think it does the best job at representing the themes of the film over any of the other covers. It may not look appealing but it's brilliant. I feel like the people that vote for it as worst most likely haven't seen it.

Best

1. A Night to Remember
2. The Gold Rush
3. World on a Wire

Runners-up: The 39 Steps, Belle de jour, Brief Encounter, Harold and Maude, Lonesome, Three Outlaw Samurai

Worst

1. Tiny Furniture

Heaven's Gate
Summer Interlude
Summer with Monika
This Happy Breed
Umberto D.

Heaven's Gate would look back without a title on it, but the director's name being as large as the title just looks awful. The Summers and Umberto D. are too basic. I realize they may express what the films are about or, at least, the feelings of specific scenes, but they're so damn plain and basic. This Happy Breed would look fine if it was a smeared painting or something similar. As it is, it just looks like a zoomed-in screenshot.

I think Raoul fits into that Criterion 'quirky' category very well, sort of like Hausu does. Frankly, TF fits into something IFC would release.

I can't yet post the Big Poll because the last release date of the year is 12/11 (Following, Qatsi Trilogy).

The Cover Art Poll results will be posted with the others in Early 2013.

Best Blu-ray of the year voting will be fascinating. One can argue CC has had better years but there are several films that saw excellent releases.
