OUT OF PRINT SALE

Dear Criterion collectors,

Our three least favorite initials: OOP. Since we launched the Criterion Collection more than twenty-five years ago, we’ve endeavored to keep everything we’ve published in print. But despite our efforts to renew rights, we are losing a large group of titles from StudioCanal at the end of March, and we wanted to give you advance notice that our editions will be going out of print. Until we’re out of stock, we will be offering these titles at an additional $5 off on our website. The titles are going to Lionsgate, and we don’t know when they may be rereleased. As ever, we will continue to try to relicense the films so that they can rejoin the collection sometime in the future.

Here are the titles that will soon be out of print:

Alphaville
Carlos Saura’s Flamenco Trilogy (Eclipse Series 6)
Le corbeau
Coup de torchon
Diary of a Country Priest
The Fallen Idol
Forbidden Games (Criterion and Essential Art House editions)
Gervaise (Essential Art House edition)
Grand Illusion (Criterion and Essential Art House editions)
Le jour se lčve (Essential Art House edition)
Last Holiday (Essential Art House edition)
Mayerling (Essential Art House edition)
The Orphic Trilogy
Peeping Tom
Pierrot le fou (DVD and Blu-ray editions)
Port of Shadows
Quai des Orfčvres
The Small Back Room
The Tales of Hoffmann (Criterion and Essential Art House editions)
Trafic
Le trou
Variety Lights (Essential Art House edition)
The White Sheik

Take note: this may be your last chance to pick up spine number 1 from the collection.

Happy viewing!
The Criterion Collection

well considering that they dont lose the rights until the end of march (thats when they have to stop making them) as long as you get your order in by the beginning of march, I think criterion would be able to accomodate it.

They're backordered, but I'm 99.9% sure Criterion will be allowed to fill all orders dated before the end of the OOP sale. Remember that they hold all their materials, it's just that they can't sell them publicly after the license runs out.

Still, once the listing shows "Out of Print" on the CC web site you definitely won't get one, so if you're hesitating, I'd order now to secure your copies.

If Criterion's site still lets you actually order the item, then they will be getting more stock. IF they are out of stock and can not get any more copies it will NOT let you order from them. They won't give the option.

As a matter of fact, my home theater doesn't even exist. Unfortunately, I've never had any type of surround sound system in any home that I've ever lived in, and my televisions could always be bigger than what they are. It's obvious that I'm a big supporter of Criterion and their output, and now that I'm old enough (32) and financially secure enough, I'd like to stay on top of their blu-ray releases. When DVDs first came around in 1998, I was 19 or 20 years old and couldn't possibly keep up with their releases at that time... nor, was I even into foreign and classic films then as I am now. I'm also a 'collector' of films, as well, so take that for what it is. Back at the dawn of mid- to late-90's widespread internet service, I was buying VHS tapes that were out-of-print just for the sake that they were OOP. If someone told me it wasn't available, I was gonna make sure that I found myself a copy. That was then, though, and I'm obviously not as crazy about it these days, and I am more selective with my purchases, but I still have no problems dropping the money for any Criterion blu-rays that come out. I'll find something in every single one of their releases that I can appreciate... that, I can count on. It doesn't mean I'm gonna fall in love with every release, but I'll definitely find something to appreciate about it. Crazy? Maybe. But, it's my thing, ya know?

Hell yeah! How could anyone only enjoy films that are released by Criterion on laser disc, DVD, or blu-ray? I am by no means some type of film elitist. I'm just a lover of film, in general. I try to educate myself enough before I ever offer an opinion on anything. One of my biggest pet peeves with film is reading lots of uneducated opinions on forums from people who have no clue what they're talking about 'cause they haven't done their homework... the same thing happens when I'm in a theater and I overhear people talking about movies they have no clue about. I just like to educate and inform people when I can.

But, back to your original question, if you just look at my 'collection' list, you'll see that I own many types of films on blu-ray. Hell, my favorite director is John Waters, who's directed some of my favorite films like "Cry-Baby," "Pink Flamingos," "Desperate Living," "Pecker," etc. My favorite film of all-time is the original 1961 version of "The Parent Trap" with Hayley Mills. I've love that film since elementary school, and that's never gonna change, ya know? Do I own Michael Bay's "Transformers" on blu-ray? Of course, I do. I also saw it in the theater... along with the 1986 animated "Transformers" film in the theater when it was released, but that's another story. And, of course, some film elitists think it's total rubbish, but I find entertainment value out of it. Obviously, not everyone's tastes are the same, and some people think other peoples' tastes are crap, but at the end of the day it all comes down to being personal opinions that don't mean anything in the real world.

Yes. Obviously, we all want the best transfer available, I'd like to think, but it's just not possible. For some blu-rays, though, I could care less about what some reviewer says about PQ & AQ 'cause I know I'm gonna get it no matter what. However, sometimes I will take into consideration the opinions of reviewers that I have come to respect, and from that I will make a decision on whether or not I want to make the purchase or not. I'm not gonna rely on just one or two reviews, though... I'm looking all across the internet at different sites and forums for reviews. And, at the end of the day, it's my money and my choice to purchase something or not. Obviously, the three films in Criterion's recent release of Roberto Rossellini's "War Trilogy" on DVD aren't in the best of shape film-wise, but that didn't stop me from laying down $45 for it.

So, I hope all that rambling of mine gives you a bit of insight into, at least, one movie lover on here, JediFonger.

CC
Funny that you would mention John Waters, he an awesome film director, I also met him many years ago at a grocery store in his hometown of Baltimore, MD. when I was visiting family. What a really nice guy, we talked for like 15 minutes, mostly about film. I did'nt get a picture with him or an autograph, meeting him in person was much cooler than any of that! I would rebuy his films on blu if they came out, the Hairspray remake don't really count. He does really good commentary tracks IMO.

Hey Jedi,

Were your discs OK? Notice some people complaining of muffed up discs because of how it was packaged or so.

They have inserts with information. Just a paragraph or so. I still have quite a bit of my Eclipse sets to go through. Still on "Silent Ozu". But just remember that they are expensive now. During the B&N 50% sale they go down to $11-20 of them. That's how I was able to get many of them is through that sale alone. It's difficult enough that I'm being enticed with Criterion and other companies...hehe...need to budget.

discs are perfect. the box is pretty heavy, that's why if some of the discs do get dislodged somehow they'll get scratched. guess mine was packaged properly =).

thanks for the info on Postwar. i'll end up skipping that set. reason is because i also luv the bonus/extras and the AK 100 do NOT have any of the bonus/extras. it's basically an "eclipse" release of all of the 25 films Criterion has current rights to. they do not have rights to the other 5 (well 'Ran' ran out

i also have the 16 single movie releases (individual) releases of all of AK's movies =). i have all 31 of AK's movies .

yes i'm quite OCD =P.he's my fav. director of all time.

the yojimbo/sanjuro/7sam BDs will be day1's for me =). quite rare these days.

See? I knew it would blow my Filmladen disc away, even their DVD edition is sharper and less reddish. This is why I worry about all these titles heading to StudioCanal: Nobody beats Criterion at HD transfers, nobody.

In hindsight, that last sentence in my review is phrased awfully...

We all pretty much assumed this, but here it is from Criterions site.

"Our out of print sale continues. We’re offering $5 off on a slew of titles whose rights we can’t renew—including the indispensable Pierrot le fou. Thanks to the huge response, many of the StudioCanal titles we’ll lose at the end of March are showing up as back-ordered on our site. But don’t worry—we’re having more copies sent to the fulfillment house. We should be back in stock by the middle of next week, and we’ll honor all orders placed through the end of March. Click here for the full list"

StudioCanal France has confirmed they are working on Grand Illusion, so I'd expect the US release by the end of the year.

Yes! Apparently there is a way of getting replacement cases without dealing with PayPal. I got this response today in my e-mail from Karen Mesoznik.

Hi Chad,

Thank you for your email!

I apologize for the delay in response! If you'd like you can give me a call and I will assist you in making a Credit Card payment.

I hope this is helpful! Thank you for supporting Criterion!
