[Show spoiler]It is a quietly powerful and often touchingly humorous look at a family gathering on an anniversary of the oldest son's death. It really surprised me, because I had my doubts I would like it from reading the description and the reviews, not really what I would normally go for. The whole film has an intimacy to it that is very real. And although the dialog is exceptionally well done, I especially liked how the director frequently used the camera to show detail and mood without dialog.

It is one of my most re-watched Criterions. To me, what makes the film so brilliant is that the director, Kore-ada, can take such a low-key approach to a slice of everyday life - showing us the gathering of an extended Japanese family, their interactions over several meals, interwoven with interpersonal tensions, quiet demons, and modern vs. traditional cultural themes - and make a totally compelling and identifiable story out of it for a non-Japanese audience.
Thank you once again for a wonderful and thoughtful description! When these B&N sales come up (and now with Best Buy and Amazon too), I usually bounce all over the internet trying to find different opinions or reviews of the various films. I don't remember exactly what I read about this film that drew me to it. I just remember that everything I read about it was raves ... just like what you have to say about it. I'm pretty sure I'll be buying it ... just not sure when.
[Show spoiler](Oh who am I kidding! With the way I've been caving in to these recent sales, I'll probably have it before the year is over. ).

So I'll probably still pick up The Game on Blu-ray...eventually...give it another shot since it has been a good while since I have seen it. My brother has never seen it so I need to watch it with him and see what he thinks.
I sure don't understand the bashing of The Game that's been going on here. I love it.

Topsy-Turvy is an A grade production but its an incredibly different film than Naked so I couldn't even begin to compare those two.
A while back I asked for opinions on Topsy-Turvy and, interestingly (well, if I remember correctly), someone made that comparison between the two and basically said if you liked one of them there's a good chance you may not like the other one (that it wouldn't be best to go into the other one expecting more of the same, basically)... so since I love Naked, I kind of put it off for now... still want to see it, but I'm disappointed I haven't come across another film of his that I've liked anywhere nearly as much.

Yes!!! Plus Life is Sweet, Career Girls, Meantime, Abigail's Party, Happy Go Lucky. For starters. Mike Leigh has had a long and doggedly good career.

Not necessarily bashing it. I didn't say it was a terrible film...just not as good as Fincher's other work. There are scenes in the film that just go past the line of plausibility for me. I can only suspend my disbelief so much. I would still call it a good film but personally think it could have been a lot better if it were reworked in areas.

This. Actually, I liked it more than his other films..but I still completely agree with that, I don't see it as great (you're right--really have to throw plausibility out entirely), but it was certainly very entertaining and basically what I expected out of it.

Just a few days ago I pre-ordered the Following Criterion release. I watched this on netflix the other day since it was the only Nolan film I hadn't seen. I enjoyed it a lot, reminded me of Memento in terms of the style and storytelling.

This was a blind buy for me. I figured anything from the Criterion collection couldn't be bad. I really like Fincher as a director as well. However, compared to his other films I thought it was one of the weaker ones. The premise of the film was very engaging but I have to agree there were moments I thought that were too convenient to and coincidental for a Fincher film. Also, the pay off at the end did not work for me. Everything he went through for that!!! Sorry, just left a bad taste in my mouth.

Oops, Mill Creek, not Echo Bridge. Still, it deserves imho to be in the collection. It has been mistreated on DVD. I would love some substantive supplements.

Except, of course, for those isolated moments when the Hint Cartoon comes out--
And then we get a brief interlude of:

"Look, a cartoon of someone crying, and someone else patting him on the back! Can't guess this one!"
"Baffled here too--Looks like we'll have to wait for next February's announcements."
"Uh, guys, it's 'The Sorrow & the Pity'."
"Yep, looks like Sorrow & the Pity to me!"
"I dunno, might be 'it's Pat: the Movie'!"
"Day one for Sorrow & the Pity!"
"Woohoo, it's Quentin Tarantino, finally!"
"No, it is NOT!"
