I think it's the Pioneer 919. I can't remember off the top of my head. It's actually the latest Pioneer LD player and the only one still in "production". It only "upconverts" DVDs to 1080i via component though. I haven't used it in so long! I only use it to watch a few movies that haven't made it to HD yet, like "True Lies" because the DVD sucks!

Its more of an insult to Cameron because even when JLG does it it still has ten times as much substance and food for thought than Avatar...

I agree. It looks fantastic. It was a decent film, but could have been much better. Viggo Mortenson really should have been nominated for something despite the somewhat poor storyline. He was great in it.

And of course two incredible performances in the lead roles. |

Cameron is a fairly decent director. Then again I'm not a "movie snob" who judges a movie by it's production cost. I've seen a little of Godard's work and it seemed average at best to me. Commence attackes and insults...

The roasting of Cameron from Criterion viewers happened long ago when there were comparisons between Roy Ward Baker's 1958 film "A Night to Remember" (released by Criterion in the late '90s) and it's about the "Titanic". Of course, there are people who are were first to say that Cameron sponged off his film from ANtR. But really, they are two different films and I enjoyed both. And as far as Godard-ites upset with Cameron...maybe it was from Cameron's comments: I believe that Godard got it exactly backwards. Cinema is not truth 24 times a second, it is lies 24 times a second. Actors are pretending to be people they’re not, in situations and settings which are completely illusory. Day for night, dry for wet, Vancouver for New York, potato shavings for snow. The building is a thin-walled set, the sunlight is a xenon, and the traffic noise is supplied by the sound designers. It’s all illusion, but the prize goes to those who make the fantasy the most real, the most visceral, the most involving. This sensation of truthfulness is vastly enhanced by the stereoscopic illusion. Personally, they are two different directors who created films in different times, different situations. Godard created the films he wanted, never had the financial support and made films in weeks. Cameron definitely helped change the scope of cinema in the use of technology from "Terminator" and on. His films are big money makers, has a big budget and is expected to perform well in the box office. Both are talented in their own right. But very different directors from different time periods that produce different kind of films. |

I just saw Contempt on the new StudioCanal Bluray a few days ago. It was my first Godard film in colour - I did see Breathless many years ago on TV and loved it.
The Bluray presentation of Contempt is very nice - colours very natural and a pretty clean print. There were some scenes that appeared a bit soft, and others that were razor sharp. I loved the lush visuals and enjoyed the scenes with Fritz Lang which I thought were quite funny. I did get somewhat impatient with the two leads and their incessant interrogation of each other - it seemed almost juvenile. It was almost like Piccoli drove Bardot to turn around and despise him because of his hassling and distrust. Perhaps that's the point, but their relationship didn't convince me overall. But it's definitely a disc that I'll be watching again soon. |

I just got my copy of "Pierrot le fou" from Amazon today. I'm excited to watch it, but a bit apprehensive as a lot have suggested starting with "Breathless" when getting into Godard. I do know how the story goes as I've read synopses all over the Internet. Still, I'm sure it's something that I should experience by myself and not vicariously.
I do hope Godard listens when I say, "Be gentle with me; it's my first time." ![]() |
