I chose La Jetee/Sans Soleil as best..though I'm sure I'm the only one who will vote for it.

I watched Everlasting Moments last night. I still need to watch one of the supplements. I think I'm still digesting the movie, but I liked it okay. During the last B&N 50% off sale, I bought the DVD version of it (as well as my own bluray) thinking it would make a nice gift for a friend who is into photography. Now I'm having 2nd thoughts that it would make a good blind buy for my friend ... as it's not the cheeriest movie out there. (Just thinking out loud, I guess).

I liked Everlasting Moments a lot, loved the cinematography. I would agree that it's not a blind buy and questionable gift movie due to the tone of some of the movie, but would certainly make a good recommendation to your friend, I'd say.

STUNNING news!!!
FINALLY a version of The Last Emperor is available on blu-ray with BOTH versions in the original OAR of 2:35:1
This bd just came out in Japan from Geneon.
as we all sadly know the Criterion bd is NOT OAR, but is based on the lunatic Storrario's Universum 2:1 bullsh%#t OAR.
so friggen happy about this!
time for Criterion to see the light and redo their bd.
the Storrario curse has finally been broken!!

Good idea. Maybe I'll mention it to her before bringing it back to the store ... especially since I got a pretty good deal on it. I agree with you about the cinematography ... a beautiful picture.
[Show spoiler](no pun intended. ).

It's not the cheeriest movie but it's not oppressively dark either. In fact, it's actually pretty uplifting.

I think I know what's holding you back and yeah, giving it as a gift with a card that simply said 'Thinking of You' might be a little creepy.

But a simple conversation - what caught your eye, what you liked about it once you saw it, how Criterion is the greatest company on the face of the planet - should take care of any concerns.

I wish Criterion would release some of the eclipse sets to HD. I know most films aren't in the greatest condition but at the same time I believe they are using good enough masters. I would be game for upgrading.

Down by Law would have been my 2nd choice... I think they were about equal when I considered them so I went with the film I liked more.

Default So stoked on the eventual release of On the Waterfront.

With its unusual dockworker-gone-wacky premise and a solid cast of comic talent that includes Rod Steiger, Karl Malden and Lee J. Cobb, 1954's ON THE WATERFRONT delivers exactly the sort of gentle, goofy fun that it sets out to. The tv-ready direction of Elia Kazan gives the proceedings a pleasant polish, while Budd Schulberg's script, which revolves around a hapless longshoreman's (Marlon Brando) clumsy attempts to foil incompetent union bosses while simultaneously romancing a local beauty (Eva Marie Saint), dishes out plenty of clever gags. ON THE WATERFRONT is enjoyable in its own good-natured way.

This would probably be my choice. Or maybe la Haine. Idk, I still have to watch Week end and Brazil.

Barnes and Noble cancelled my order for Rosetta! I'm pissed. They're saying something was wrong with my card apparently. Damn, was really looking forward to watching that one.
Anyone know if Amazon send preorders the day it's released or a couple of days before? Trying to see when Brazil will get here.

Amazon typically sends pre-orders out the day before before release and they typically get there on release day if you have Prime. Not the case with my Brazil/Purple Noon order though.

It's being released today so a couple days before probably isn't in the cards anymore

But seriously folks, they used to send even super-saver shipping preorders a day or two before release but I haven't had that happen in a looooong time and even people with Prime have been squalking about them missing release dates.

It has some beautiful shots in the film.

The scene where
[Show spoiler]the children are watching (through the window) their friend being prepared for the grave is incredibly moving.

That was a great scene. Not only was it beautifully shot,
[Show spoiler] the way she almost dehumanized the dead kid as she got more and more absorbed in what she was doing was really, really well done. She started very tentatively, then got more and more drawn into composing her shots until she almost (and that almost is pretty important, I don't want to make her sound cold) could have shooting a bowl of fruit.

It was very subtle and very, very effective.

Okay, thanks. You're right. I won't return it. I'll figure something out.
