They did , but these are good news for those who live in the UK. These Chabrols will have more extras from what I have seen too. The Japanese stuff is what has me extremely excited. There is no way Criterion can top this. A Sun-Tribe Myth from the Bakumatsu Era isn't only a superbly rated film on Japan, it is one that has been impossible to come by for years. Top-5 in the list made by Kinema Junpo of the best Japanese films. This is the kind of stuff I would like Criterion doing, giving extremely rare but deserving films a release. The Complete (Existing) Films of Sadao Yamanaka is another "Too-good-to-be-true" release. This is as important as The Complete Jean Vigo was to Criterion, only rarer . A Japanese master from the early sound era. I have not been this excited for announcements in a long time. My expected announcement day now will come every two months instead of the 15th !

I love historical biography, so I'll try to do just that BohemianGraham. Thanks for those links...

Put 25 towards The Qatsi Trilogy, buy Down by Law, or buy Heavens Gate.

Why has it taken me at least a year to notice the visual pun in your name? And now I can't get the song out of my head.

- A Sun-Tribe Myth from the Bakumatsu Era ()
- The Complete (Existing) Films of Sadao Yamanaka (DVD-Only) ()

These are beyond amazing. Eureka has beaten every expectation I could have had an hour ago. They have beaten my expectations for 2013 and counting...
I would guess La Notte will be released by Criterion in a trilogy set. It would be a great surprise for a March announcement.

I would hope so but the MoC will do for the moment. Eureka deserves the support, they have been doing an amazing work for the cinephile community .

If that happened I might cry. Maybe. At least just a little.

I wouldn't even care what else they released: Tiny Furniture 2, That's My Boy...it would probably be the best announcement since I've been following them.

Down by Law. Possibly the most impressive upgrade of the year, imo.

I was fortunate enough to see The Dekalog (in it's entirety) when I still had NetFlix's disc plan. It seems Facets is the only company that has released it in the US and at $90 (for three DVDs) on Amazon...it would be nice to get at least an Eclipse set out of it from CC. I don't know if they would be able to get a better transfer, as it was originally released for TV (much like Berlin Alexanderplatz), but ANY better/cheaper release would be welcome.

I was lucky enough to see 2001 in the theater, the year it was released. I must have been 10 years old and my brother had a friend from Catholic school, whose father managed a local movie theater that had an early version of "surround sound" for that time. The bass response was pretty impressive and the film blew me away...even at the ripe age of 10. No wonder I became a big Kubrick fan.

I have the DVD set and it gets the job done, but I'd love more extras and better PQ/AQ. Truthfully, I mostly want it more available because it deserves to be.

Kino also released extended editions of two episodes: A Short Film About Love and A Short Film About Hate. Both well worth the purchase.

AFI Silver did marathon showings of all the episodes (including the two extended versions) in 2002 I think. Wish I'd gone to at least some. My office was literally a five minute walk.

My best experience with 2001 was seeing it on the big screen then getting to hear Keir Dullea talk about it after the film. He's a really intelligent guy and loves Kubrick films.

Going back to the darkish ages, my first viewing was around 1984ish when I was 12. My local PBS station was airing it in a radical way, simulcasting it in stereo on its sister NPR station. I don't recall if it was OAR. I remember falling asleep halfway through, despite my excitement at stereo! My next memorable run-in was buying it on VHS at Borders in 1995. I accidentally bought P&S since I couldn't imagine it came any other way than widescreen. They were cool and let me exchange it.

Over the next decade I was lucky to catch it in Cinerama and 70mm. The former was wonderful -- I watched the first half from dead center and the second half from the balcony. The 70mm showing was disappointing. My fiancée was fussy, we got there late and were way in the back. Ah well, what're you gonna do?

That and the Seventh Seal followed by Von Sydow last year... those must have been sublime!

Now that's good parenting! Hopefully one day I'll get the same glorious opportunity.

Oh, what a nightmare. If that happened to me I'd be devastated (maybe even cry on the spot).

I know it's not the same (being digital and all) but, I've been lucky enough to catch much of the Cinemark Classic Series and the 4K releases of Godfather (which I've seen prior projected on film) and Lawrence of Arabia. I gotta feeling that We'll see 2001 in the next lineup.

You are in for a real treat. Letter Never Sent is a beautiful film that features several shots that have to be seen to be believed. Cinematic images as poetry would be the best way I could describe this one.

I HATE YOU!

Good for you...that must have been a huge experience for you. The closest I ever came to that was meeting the members of Yes (sans Wakeman) at HMV Records for a record signing at least 17-20 years ago.

Has anyone seen these blu-ray caps for THIEF OF BAGDAD on Beaver? Is it me or does the Criterion DVD look better than this German Blu in several of the comparisons?
